10,000 trees to be planted

À PARTIR DU 24 JUIN 2013

“We have a three-year plan,” says Saucier, who has long been a champion of the trees in the township. “It looks promising, but I also want to ensure that we preserve the trees we have.” One of her biggest concerns is the loss of existing forest and mature trees, including those that would be removed if the lot owned by the Upper Canada District School Board near Russell Public School is rezoned for residential and the trees removed for housing. “While we are scrambling to find places to plant trees, here is an acre within the village that has mature trees of over 50 years,” said Saucier. It would make a great outdoor education area with a path, benches, and a serenity place for kids who are having meltdowns.” The Township will decide the rezoning request this week.

RUSSELL l A new subcommittee of the Russell Township Environmental Advisory Committee plans to plant 10,000 trees at the former sandpit on the Russell Township property near the municipal landfill. The new committee is seeking volunteers and members to help achieve this goal and will start planting work in the early spring. The trees will be seedlings, so not all will live to be mature trees, but it is a beginning. Councilor Eric Bazinet, and committee member Cindy Saucier, are both pleased with the plan and looking forward to getting the seedlings in the ground.
