A funeral home owner had approached Dean Kelly and asked him to come up with a better cremation box because the box he and other funeral homes were using was essentially a corrugated tray on which a body had to be lifted over the side to insert. The container then had to be folded and taped and just didn’t hold a body very well. Kelly, Fifer and one of Covington’s structural designers met with the funeral home owner and a crematory owner to discuss exactly what would satisfy their needs. Covington Box then designed, manufactured and pat- ented the “Easy Entrance Body Box,” which allows a fu- neral director to fold down the length panel of a die cut double wall box, slide a body into the box, lock the panel back up in place, and put a lid on it. Without tape, glue, or staples. The box can then go straight to the crematory. Fifer says the product is the company’s “number one selling design to this day” and that Covington sells them and other funeral corrugated products to the top casket manufacturers in the world. The success of Covington’s “Easy Entrance” product led to an inquiry about cloth covered corrugated caskets, which are made for a body to be viewed at a church or funeral home, then burned in its entirety at a crematory or buried in a vault at a cemetery.
