The company converts its cremation containers, cor- rugated caskets and primarily traditional brown boxes on equipment that includes die cutters, 4-color letter presses, single and double head gluers and stitchers, a laminator, belly banders, eccentric slotters, partition slotters, and slit- ter machines and will handle a variety of manual packag- ing services, including collating, kitting, and assembly. Everything Under The Sun Covington Box’s 200,000-square-foot facility, sits on a 17-acre parcel in Waterloo, which presented an ideal opportunity for some kind of renewable energy initiative. Three years ago, Fifer and General Manager Mike Rogers began discussing the possibility of installing wind turbines or solar panels to offset the company’s energy costs and reduce its carbon footprint. They soon realized, however, that both options were very expensive and there wasn’t any assistance in the way of federal or state grants. A year ago, a friend who put in a solar field told Fifer that the Unit- ed States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was offering

Fifer contracted Ag Technologies, a small family-owned company based in Richmond Indiana, to install its Solar- Cam system, which for Covington Box & Packaging is com- prised of 40 solar arrays in four rows of 10 arrays each, totaling 1,280 solar panels. After a 6-month installation, the system was fully operational on March 1 of this year. The complete solar system sits on 1.4 acres and now supplies 100 percent of Covington’s electrical needs. “When we crunched the numbers, we saw it would be a six- or seven-year payback on our $950,000 investment,” says Fifer. “We would be cutting into one of our largest Covington Box & Packaging’s solar farm is comprised of 40 solar arrays in four rows of 10 arrays each, totaling 1,280 solar panels.
