BASEBALL, HOT DOG, APPLE PIE, AND CHEVROLET What Independence Means to Me

I f there’s a phrase that exemplifies American culture, it’s from that old Chevrolet commercial from the ‘70s which I’m sure you probably remember. As goes the slogan, “Baseball, hot dog, apple pie, and Chevrolet!” Here’s how I associate with the American auto manufacturer’s old saying. We like our children to stay active in sports, so we start them at a young age with T-ball and then baseball. Baseball is and has always been my favorite sport to play and is no doubt one of America’s favorite pastimes. From the tune “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” to eating shelled peanuts and catching pop flies, baseball is truly ingrained in American culture. I remember playing baseball as a child, and I remember hitting my first home run. I played baseball throughout my entire childhood, and I enjoyed watching my son’s ball games. I even enjoy watching baseball on TV. When we traveled to San Francisco last July, we had the opportunity to attend a Giants home game against the Cleveland Indians. I was surprised that the AT&T Park was standing-room only for this ordinary regular season home game in the middle of a weekday afternoon. This turnout goes to show you how popular baseball is in America. Not everyone has tried a raw oyster, but I’m willing to bet everyone has munched down on a hot dog at some point. With the variety of franks, brats, wieners, and dogs I see in the meats aisle

and at most restaurants and gas stations, it’s plain to see Americans loves hot dogs. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, the first hot dog stand in America opened in the Bowery district of New York City in 1871. By 1893, hot dogs became standard fare in baseball parks across America. According to the Council, major league baseball fans will consume over 19 million hot dogs in baseball stadiums across America this year.

vehicles, but my favorite has been “Weezie,” my 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 4x4 crew cab. I have driven her over 340,000 miles, and I even preferred to drive Weezie over my E-350 Mercedes for years. Weezie has been from Jacksonville to the Tennessee mountains to the Florida Keys and all sorts of places in between, making memories every place we traveled. Suffice it to say: She’s a keeper and I have plans for Weezie. I recently bought myself a new truck. After test driving GMC’s 2018 Sierra Denali HD 4X4 Crew Cab with the Duramax Diesel, I just had to have it. To me, that’s freedom — a luxury driving vehicle with the power of a freight train.

The first pie I remember eating as a child was a homemade apple pie my mother made. As a youngster, I remember choosing to dress up like John Chapman, aka “Johnny Appleseed,” for one of my school events. John Chapman was an American original I admired early on because his dream was to produce so many apples that no one in America would ever go hungry. Johnny Appleseed grew thousands of apple trees from Massachusetts to Ohio from 1972 to 1805. According to the American Pie Council, the U.S. is one of the world’s largest apple producers today. I remember when I was a youngster, my family owned a Chevrolet truck, and I remember how much I used to enjoy riding in the front seat next to my father. I have driven all different kinds of

Mentally Stimulating Activities for Summer

For Teenagers: Family Dinner Party Cooking teaches so many important skills: math, science, nutrition, concentration, cultural understanding, following directions, creativity, time management, and more. Even better, it doesn’t feel like learning; it feels like fun. Encourage your older children to take the reins for preparing regular meals throughout the summer. You can pick guiding themes, like “a trip to Mexico” or “pasta party,” but let them choose the recipes and prep the meals on their own.

Every summer, parents across the country have to deal with the same delicate problem. They want to make sure their kids continue to learn without feeling like they’re being assigned tasks. After all, summer homework is every child’s worst nightmare. Luckily, you don’t have to rely on math problems and book reports to keep your child’s development from taking a two- month vacation. Here are a few mentally stimulating activities that are as educational as they are fun. For Little Ones: Homemade Bubbles Bubbles fascinate young children, so why not spend a day making your own solution and experimenting by blowing different types of bubbles? The formula is simple: 1 part dish soap (Dawn or Joy work best) to 10 parts water. Optionally, you can also include 1/4 part glycerin. The process of making the solution will teach ratios, and finding creative ways to blow bubbles fosters problem-solving skills and creative thinking.

For the Entire Family: An Educational Field Trip

Field trips always inspire excitement in students, and you’ll find the same goes for your family members. You can tailor your destination to the interests of your kids for maximum engagement. If you have a family of art lovers, head to a museum for some inspiration and discussion. Kids who prefer the outdoors will enjoy a

nature walk or hike. You can bring along a field guide to identify flora and fauna. These trips may not pack the thrill of a water park, but they’re fun in an entirely different way.

2 WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR SPOUSE What’s the Difference Between a Divorce and an Annulment?

The end of a marriage is a defining moment. The emotional gauntlet of failed love is complicated enough for someone to go through, but add in the process of making it official, and it can be an overwhelming burden. When a couple seeks to end their marriage, they most commonly seek a divorce or dissolution of marriage. However, dissolution is not the only option available to do away with a bad marriage. There are specific instances where you can have a marriage annulled if it is a “void” or “voidable” marriage. Here’s a quick overview of the difference between divorce and annulment. Divorce Filing for divorce or dissolution of marriage recognizes the existence of a valid marriage as well as the judicially imposed rights and responsibilities towards both parties as well as towards any children born of the marriage. Annulment Filing for annulment is to refuse to recognize the existence of a valid marriage because it is either void from the beginning or void “ab initio” or voidable due to fraudulent inducement to marry and the fraud has not been accepted or the marriage has not been consummated.

Divorce is a legal end to a valid marriage, and annulment is the wiping away of a void or voidable marriage from existence. Florida doesn’t have an annulment statute, but a party may petition the court for annulment so long as they can demonstrate they meet specific criteria defined by case law.

INJURED BY FIREWORKS?

There’s nothing better than watching fireworks on the Fourth of July. It’s a great way to bring the community together and enjoy a beautiful display of independence. But a professionally done firework show is only a small part of the equation. For many Americans, they love nothing more than putting on a production of their own. Many neighborhoods are transformed by loud booms and pops reminiscent of war zones. This seemingly harmless activity can become a volatile situation that threatens the safety of everyone in the vicinity. A 2017 study done by the Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that approximately 11,100 people suffered injuries from fireworks last year. Not just minor scrapes, either; these are only the ones that required a visit to the hospital for treatment. This begs the question, “Who’s at fault if you’re injured by a firework?” Negligence A majority of firework injuries stem from negligence. If the injured party can prove that the person responsible for lighting the firework was acting negligently, then you may have a case. There could be a multitude of factors that led to the injury, but

it often stems from a lack of oversight, and most importantly, common sense.

Product Liability In some cases, injuries will be sustained that have nothing to do with negligence. Defective fireworks are very common and can be dangerous. Situations like these require an injured party to prove that the manufacturer is at fault. The defective pyrotechnics could result from a lack of oversight in production, or the company may have willingly distributed faulty merchandise.

In either case, they could be responsible for causing injuries that result from their product.

Dos Ojos, Mexico The Spanish translation of the name for this magical system of caves is “two eyes,” and you’ll want to have yours checked after you see this swimming hole.
