Trousers Policy: • Trousers of the turnout gear cannot be tucked in the boot. • Trousers must fully cover the top edge of each boot. When the athlete bends forward to touch their toes, no portion of the boot’s top edge may be visible at any point around the perimeter. • Patches, decals, and a pocket for a baton are allowed on trousers. Gloves Policy: • Gloves must be designated for structural fire suppression and bear a compliant label. • Gloves with standard wear may be worn in competition until which point would be deemed unsafe. (i.e the exterior outer shell has been worn through exposing the thermal liner.) No holes are permitted! • Due to the high use of gloves, we recognize that labels tend to fall out or become unreadable. If a pair of gloves meets this criterion, and are in working order, they may be able to be reviewed by the onsite gear inspector. Helmets Policy: • Helmet must contain chin strap, edging, helmet shell, high temperature foam liner and impact protection / system. • MODIFICATIONS TO HELMETS: Painting of helmets, decorations and a baton clip are allowed. Helmets are not required to have Face Shield / Visor / Goggles / Burke Shields, Heat Shield, and/or Reflective materials. • Vintage helmets are not allowed and must meet the current approved gear standards by country as outlined above. SCBA and Mask Policy: Athletes are issued a 3M™ Scott™ Fire & Safety SCBA with mask to wear at each event. Wearing a SCBA properly means cinching the adjustable shoulder straps, waist belts, and chest straps to ensure stability and preventing excessive movement during play. • Athletes should cinch the adjustable shoulder straps, waist belts, and chest straps for their own safety. • Athletes may use their own 3M™ Scott™ Fire & Safety face piece only if it is compatible with the current Air-Pak®’s used by the Challenge. Athletes should confirm after arriving at the event that their mask is compatible with our equipment. Athletes arriving in the Staging Area and discovering their mask does not work will be assessed a 10-second Delay of Sport penalty. • Modifications to the functionality of the face piece are not permitted, however any tinting of the face piece or decorative mask fronts on the face shields are permitted. • Athletes may not modify Challenge issued or self-provided equipment, including removing the nose cone from the facepiece and/or tying knots or adjusting the harness straps in such a way that makes it difficult to remove the Air-Pak at the finish line. Any willful or malicious destruction of Challenge equipment will result in Disqualification and suspension pending restitution. Inspection of Gear Policy: Athletes, if they are in doubt, should see a Course Official before the first day of qualifying rounds to have their gear inspected. Like in any credible sport, it is the personal responsibility of the athlete to know and abide by all uniform policies.
A Course Official will inspect all gear as the athlete exits the course at the completion of their race. Athletes found to have a violation will receive a 15-second penalty added to their final run time.
