R e c e n t l y t h e Rector of our local church preached on St. Paul’s wonderful words of admonition and encouragement to the church at Colosse — (Col. 3: 16-17) — “Let the word o f Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one an other in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name o f the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him,” and thereby started a chain of reminiscences deep in my heart. It was many years ago, when I was a student at the Bible Insti tute of Los Angeles, that I chose this passage to be my so-called “LIFE VERSE,” thus setting a challenging pattern for the rest o f my days. The first part o f my verse was most applicable to my life as a teacher o f music and church s ch o o l worker, and o f course the “whatsoever” part still applies today in my retirement years. As a class, we Biola students had selected “Not I, but Christ” based on Galatians 2:20, for our motto. Then each o f us, with prayerful concern, chose one par

ticular verse or passage of God’s Word on which to build our own individual life and work. There after our names were always to be signed with this verse refer ence appended, and we would ever strive to live up to and be worthy o f that signed purpose. How ear nestly we searched the Scriptures to find just those words in which God seemed to be speaking direct ly to our hearts! I recall that sev eral o f my friends chose Philip- pians 4:13: “ I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me.” Other oft-chosen verses in cluded Ephesians 6:7: “ W ith good will doing service, as unto the Lord, and not to men.” And I Corinthians 1:9 : “God is faith ful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship o f his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.” We found the Gospel of St. John to abound in “Life Verses,” such as John 10: 27-28: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life” and John 15:5: “ I am the vine, ye are the branches; He that abideth in me, and I in him, bring- eth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” Several members o f our class found their most inspiring verses
