For those of you who may not know, Susan set up Hola Sober together with the help and support (both financial and moral) of her most lovely and generous family, to provide a FREE online sober community for women just like me, who became addicted to an addictive substance and needed a way out. Daily emails, Sunday magazine, this fabulous monthly magazine, along with daily online meetings are provided free of charge to all of the women who wish to avail of it. Where do I come in? I get to be a meeting host here at HS. It is the greatest gift and privilege to do so. Along with a number of other sober sisters and hosts, I get to give back by volunteering in this wonderful space and in doing so I get to finally give back this precious gift by paying it forward to other women who are just like me. And in turn I receive far more than I give and that’s the simple truth. We as human beings living in a commercially driven world can never feed the spiritual part of our being by purchasing ‘stuff’ or ingesting ‘stuff’ and that is at the core of so many addictions. A need to try fill up an empty space with mind altering chemicals left us shattered and broken. But when we step into the sober space, each and every one of us has the opportunity, and obligation I now know, to feed our souls on a daily basis by giving back. And that can be simply attending a meeting, sharing and supporting the women there, checking in with other women who we know may be struggling, or just to say Hi, I’m here, holding space for you if needed.
We have women here who do vast amounts of work in the backround and seek no gratification, only knowing that they are both giving back and paying it forward. My core (or soul as I call it) knew way back then what I needed to do to hold onto this precious gift. AA were right and wise. By giving it away freely and happily I get to keep it. A very necessary component in recovery, trust me. So today I wish you all a wonderful Christmas. For those struggling we will be here at Hola Sober, each and every day, giving, yet receiving so much more. I especially want to wish Susan Christina, Jordi, and her boys an extra special Happy Christmas, and thank them for giving us the space to do what we do.
