“This position continues to be ideal for me,” says Schae- fer, reflecting on the past ten years of being well-funded with great capital support but without the oversight and interference one might experience in a corporate envi- ronment. “We adjusted our focus to become a brown box plant proficient in running higher-end graphics and dis- plays and equipped ourselves to be able to run just about anything on our 4-color Hycorr Rotary Die Cutter. “We also had a Young Shin Die Cutter, an Automatan Labeler, and a Post Folder Gluer, so we went out and be- gan selling more high-graphic boxes.” Schaefer explains the initiative by using the “cake and frosting” philosophy, saying, “For Tavens, the sheet and brown box business is the cake and the graphics work is the frosting.” Growth Via Acquisition In June 2022, Tavens clicked into “buying mode” and with a desire to increase its footprint and expand its reach, acquired two Ohio manufacturing companies about an hour south of its Bedford Heights headquarters: Mansfield, Ohio based Corpad and Ontario, Ohio based Sash Foam Works. Schaefer explains how the acquisitions were a perfect fit because Corpad’s equipment greatly complements Tav- ens’: Tavens has a 42-inch high-speed Latitude Flexo Fold- er Gluer and Corpad has a 44-inch Emba Flexo Folder Glu- er; Tavens has an 50-inch S&S Flexo Folder Gluer that was on its last legs and Corpad has a newer and more efficient
In 2012, Ames began the search for a seasoned profes- sional to run the company and found him in Mike Schae- fer, an accomplished corrugated industry veteran who was extremely well-suited to guiding the newly rebrand- ed Tavens into its promising future. Schaefer had been in
the corrugated industry for the majority of his career, with stints in Deline Box & Display and most recently, Buckeye Corrugated Inc. (BCI). A Young Shin die cutter at Tavens’ plant in Bedford Heights complements a Baysek die cutter at Corpad’s facility in Man- sfield, Ohio.
