Sauer not only returned Schaefer’s call, they visited Tavens, assessed the situation, created preliminary draw- ings to understand the requirements of the uniquely de- signed machine. Sauer worked through the challenging engineering problem, then successfully manufactured and installed new two-piece sliding heads on the 42-inch flexo folder gluer. Scott Perell, Tavens’ Production Manager, says the Sau- er team did a tremendous job on the three-day project. “Sauer engineered the heads at their facility in St. Louis and came in on a Friday, cut off the old solid heads and

reinstalled the newly engineered split heads on Saturday and Sunday, recalibrated everything and the machine was running again on Monday morning without any problems.” The project was not without its risks. Once the old solid heads were cut off the machine there was no going back. “We took a big risk because the project could have gone in another direction if the new heads were not the exact diameter they needed to be,” says Perell. “For Sauer to come in and have that level of confidence in their parts and service was truly impressive. They did a fantastic job with the engineering.” Adds Schaefer, “Sauer made big promises to us and delivered on those promises. We had our old machine up and running like new, on time and without the struggles we had with other vendors. Sauer really came through for us. It was a joy to work with them. They were the kind of vendor we strive to be for our customers.” Above And Beyond Tavens philosophy of going “above and beyond” for its customers is simply the way it has always done business. Schaefer recognized that same quality in working with Sauer System. “We just happened to be discussing the scoring prob- lems we were having on our old S&S. We weren’t soliciting help, we were just kind of whining about our issues,” says Scott Perell points to the split upper slotting head of Tavens’ Latitude FFG. Sauer System replaced the old solid slotting heads with perfectly engineered two-piece slotting heads.
