Zumbiel Adapts, Diversifies Its Way To Success BY DAN BRUNTON
Welch Packaging Acquires Michcor Container Inc. Elkhart, Indiana based Welch Packaging, a custom manufacturer of corrugated products, announced the acquisition of Michcor Con- tainer Inc. of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Michcor Container is a well-established box manufacturer known for reliability and customer service. Founded by John Petten- gill in 1981, the company sought a partner to continue a high level of service to customers and create a secure future for hard-working employees. “Welch Packaging has a long history of running successful sheet plants with excellent service,” said Pettengill. “I’m confident in their ability to sustain Michcor Container as a long-term family busi- ness, bringing the value of the Welch network to our customers.” Welch Packaging operates a network of corrugated sheet plants supported by its own sheet feeder system. The company has built a reputation for excellence in the packaging industry, driven by a commitment to the cus- tomer experience, safety, and its associate family. Christopher Schiffenhaus Dies May 24 In Arizona

Christopher John Schiffenhaus passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona on May 24. He was 59 years old. Chris grew up in Essex Fells, New Jersey with his seven brothers and sisters. He attended West Essex
High School and then worked for the family business, Schiff- enhaus Packaging, for 25 years before moving to Cape Cod where he worked in the restaurant business as well as the construction field building homes on the cape. In 2020, he moved to Ari- zona to help care for his par- ents. Chris loved his Yankees

The Packaging Trust Purchases Assets Of Parry Machine Company The Packaging Trust of Michigan City, Indiana announced the assets purchase of Parry Machine Company, Inc. and the creation of a three-company partnership between Samuel Parry, Jorson & Carlson Co., Inc., and Applied Solutions. Since 1899, Samuel R. Parry has provided the Rigid Box industry with the critical equipment and parts to produce high-quality rigid packaging for America’s favorite brands, including Russell Stover, Hasbro, Mercedes Benz, Ama- zon, Walmart, Target, Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Tiffany & Co. Mike Coughlin and his team have continued to provide support for Parry Mitering Machines and Board Corner Cutters, as well as packaging equipment originally man- ufactured by Crathern and Smith, Stokes and Smith, New Jersey Packaging Equipment, and FMC. Samuel Parry will relocate the parts business to Michi- gan City. Aaron Judson will be the Director of Operations for the parts division, and along with Pam Ponder, Samuel Parry will continue to supply parts for Crathern and Smith, Stokes and Smith, FMC, and New Jersey packaging equip- ment. To continue to sharpen the knives used to prepare pa- per and board materials for the industry, Jorson & Carlson will assume this responsibility using the same proprietary
grinding fixtures utilized by Parry Machine. Jorson & Carlson is an industrial knife sharpening com- pany established in 1917 and centrally located in Elk Grove Village, Illinois.
Bob Ferguson of Applied Solutions LLC, in Indianapolis, Indiana, will handle the sales and Research and Develop- ment efforts for the Robox automated box spotting equip- ment and glue viscosity systems. Parry Robox spotting equipment paired with Applied Solutions glue viscosity systems have allowed box compa- nies to produce 20,000 to 23,000 boxes per 10-hour shift with state-of-the-art spotting accuracy. Bob has been involved in the Box industry since 1995 and looks forward to further integrating automation into all of the box plants. The Packaging Trust said it will diligently work with its partners to ensure a smooth transition.

The following is in celebra- tion of their resilience, innovation and steadfast family values: Founded as the Textile Printing Company in April 1924, TPC Packag- ing has a rich history intertwined with the ever-expanding textile industry of the Southeast United States. A savvy and honest businessman, Mr. Schmissrauter guided his fledg- ling company through the harsh years of the Great Depression while raising a young family. His strong values and teachings left a lasting im- pact on his family, including his son, Joe Schmissrauter, Jr. Joe Jr., born with entrepreneurial spirit, joined the family business af- ter serving in the United States Military. Known for his sales prowess, Joe Jr. could “sell ice to Eskimos” and constantly sought new opportunities for growth. This bold move launched their entry into folding carton pro- duction, setting the stage for future success. Murray, who was well-prepared for the role after years of dedication to the family business and the folding carton industry. Ms. Murray notes, “The introduction of computers, e-mail, and digital workflows in the early to late 1990s transformed our business into working with speed and ef- ficiency that compared to no other time.” TPC continued production during the COVID-19 pan- demic with careful precautions, which Ms. Murray de- scribes as “the most significant challenge of our lifetimes from a personal and business perspective.” In addition to their business success, the Schmissrauter family has made significant contributions to their commu- nity. After losing their parents in 2000, they established the Schmissrauter Cancer Resource Center at CHI Memo- rial Hospital, providing support for patients recently diag- nosed with cancer. They also set up a family fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, enabling them to support local initiatives directly. Looking ahead, TPC Packaging continues to pursue ambitious growth. A recently completed 60,000-square- foot addition to their facility will house their rigid box divi- sion, digital enhancement fulfillment services, and special- ty packaging production. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

New-Indy Class Action Pollution Case Settled For $103 Million A $103 million settlement has been reached in the New-In- dy Containerboard case brought by thousands of nearby residents who alleged the release of harmful pollutants at the company’s Catawba, South Carolina paper mill, media reports say. Parties in the case asked the US District Court of South Carolina to approve the settlement which will pay $18 mil- lion to about 6,000 residents for damages and attorney fees. Records show that the defendants also agreed to take remedial actions valued at $85 million that would in- clude the installation of a new steam stripper to remove 98 percent of “total reduced sulfur” from foul condensate. The class-action case has been litigated for more than three years after plaintiffs alleged New-Indy was negligent in the operation of the mill causing emissions of hydro- gen sulfide and other contaminants to be released from its wastewater treatment facility into the air.
Kitchener, Ontario based PaperWorks Industries Inc., for- merly Boehmer Box, announced the celebration of its 150th Anniversary from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on June 22 at 120 Trillium Drive. This milestone event will honor the company’s rich history and impact on the Kitchener-Wa- terloo region. “We’re proud to be an important part of the legacy of the Kitchener-Waterloo region,” said Jeff Sinko, General Manager of the Kitchener operation. “This milestone cele- bration is a testament to our commitment to our communi- ty and our employees, many of whom have been with us for decades.” Founded by brothers Charles and August Boehmer in 1874, the company originally began as a box manufac- turer to meet the packaging needs of the Shantz Button Company. In 2002, the company relocated to the Huron Business Park, with locations on Trillium Drive and Battler Road, marking a new era of growth and modernization. In 2015, PaperWorks Industries acquired Boehmer Box from CanAmPac.
