Nike, Living Ink Partner On Footwear Packaging
Nike sub-label ISPA (Improvise, Scavenge, Protect, Adapt) has collaborated with biosci- ence research and product company Living Ink Technologies on sustainable footwear packaging. The packaging uses Living Ink’s flexog- raphic algae ink, a water-based and algae-pig- mented alternative to traditional inks derived from petroleum-based carbon black pigment. Miraclon has designated Sri Lankan company, ALFT as a ‘Light- house Project,’ a distinction reserved for only a handful of companies worldwide. The recognition highlights ALFT’s role as a testing ground for Miraclon’s technologies. Chosen as a champion of Modern Flexo by Miraclon, ALFT Pack- aging was part of the Miraclon booth at the DRUPA exhibition, which wrapped last week. Miraclon’s CEO, Christopher Payne, along with Director Andy Yar- row and Sales Manager Hrishikesh Kulkarni, visited ALFT recently. The visit also marks a significant achievement for ALFT, as the company has been awarded the ‘Certified User’ certification for Miraclon’s NX technology for plate making by Christopher Payne himself. The certifi- cation demonstrates ALFT’s expertise and proficiency in utilizing Mira- clon’s advanced solutions. ALFT Packaging operates from a 200,000-square-foot complex. Living Ink is scaling up production to meet companies’ growing need for sustainable pig- ment in global supply chains. Each ISPA shoebox also features a QR code that directs consumers to a TEDx Talk titled “Is algae the ink of the future?” by Living Ink CEO Scott Fulbright, which highlights the genesis of the company. Nike’s sustainability initiative “Move to zero” incorporates packaging concepts that cut waste and increase recycling.
