Today, as you join the ranks of more than 25,000 proud Dean alumni worldwide, I urge you to stay connected to your Dean family. While your time at Dean may be over, “family is forever.” You can count on a lifetime of support from your Dean family — the friends you’ve made, now fellow alumni, and the dedicated professors and staff, now trusted advisors. Your Dean family is very proud indeed. My best wishes,

John R. Leiendecker Chair, Board of Trustees

Dean College History

Dean Academy At the 1864 annual convention of Universalists held in Worcester, MA, a visionary named Dr. Oliver Dean and his colleagues discussed the Commonwealth’s need for a robust educational institution in this region of the Commonwealth. On March 27, 1865, the Massachusetts legislature granted a charter, and Dr. Dean gifted nine acres of land and $125,000 to build Dean Academy. The Academy offered men and women a well-rounded program of academics, athletics, and student activities, preparing them for admission to college. An excellent reputation soon resulted, and the standards set during the early years have formed a strong tradition followed by Dean today. Dean Junior College Exceptional growth led to a new charter in 1941 for the creation of Dean Junior College. Becoming nationally accredited in 1957, Dean continued to expand and flourish. During the next three decades, Dean introduced the Louis Pieri Gymnasium, Arthur W. Peirce Science Center, E. Ross Anderson Library, Grant F. Longley Athletic Field, the Children’s Center, the WGAO radio station, the Academic Computer Center, and a renovated Campus Center. Dean College Dean Junior College became Dean College in 1994, and the first baccalaureate degree program, the Bachelor of Arts in Dance, was launched in 2000. The College continued to see significant expansion, as Dean introduced the Green Family Library Learning Commons, the state-of-the- art Main Stage theatre, the Smith Dining Center, the Dorothy and Glendon Horne ’31 Hall, the Morton Family Learning Center, the renovated Digital Studios, and more. In 2014, the Joan Phelps Palladino School of Dance celebrated 50 years. Our 150th Anniversary In 2015, Dean College celebrated its sesquicentennial anniversary, marking an incredible milestone and kicking off yet another period of impressive growth. The College collaborated with Kraft Sports + Entertainment to establish the Center for Business, Entertainment & Sport Management; unveiled the renovated Grant Field; dedicated Dale Lippert Field; and opened the Rooney Shaw Center for Innovation in Teaching. Change, Growth, and Success In the past 10 years, Dean has been granted active NCAA Division III status for its 16 athletic teams, introduced the Dean Career Advantage, and has continued expanding academic programs to increase students’ career preparation and opportunities. The College also completed renovations and upgrades to several athletic spaces; the Green Family Library Learning Commons, including the addition of the Theodore and Cynthia Berenson Center for Writing, Mathematics and Presentation Excellence; and the Arthur W. Peirce Center for Technology and Science. In 2021, the Dean R. Sanders ’47 School of Business was named to honor the alumnus whose bequest represents the largest estate gift in the College’s history. In 2022, Dean’s Campus Center was renamed the Dr. Paula M. Rooney Student Center in honor of Dr. Rooney’s 27-year tenure as the 13th President of Dean College. Dean Today Today, as we celebrate the institution’s 160th anniversary, we look toward a bright future as an accredited private coeducational college offering full-time, part-time, bachelor’s, and associate degrees. Dean College continues in its mission to provide a supportive academic environment that promotes student engagement, exceptional teaching, and The Dean Difference. Fittingly, the College motto, inspired by Dr. Dean’s family saying, is Forti et Fideli Nihil Difficile: “To the strong and faithful nothing is difficult.”

Our loyalty we pledge to thee, Oh, Mother Dean, Our lives shall be a faith forever true to live, Of praises thine in life to give; Sung praises of thee ours shall be Thro’out this world’s eternity. Oh, Alma Mater’s storied past thro’out our lives will ever last. With years that pass to memory, Thy pledge to youth shall constant be. We love thy paths, thy golden hours, Thy ivied walls, thy shaded bowers. To precepts high we learned of thee We promise love and loyalty. Oh, Alma Mater’s lessons true Will be our pride this whole life through. Thy spiring pines, thy portals wide, Thy sturdy elms the years abide. Fond mem’ries ring, ne’er to depart, Forever sealed within each heart. We love thee yet, men strong and tried, Our hope and joy in thee confide. Oh, Alma Mater’s beautied place Will e’er remain fond mem’ries grace. Oh, Awpie Way that leads afar, Our love returns where e’er we are To days we spent with life inspired, With spirit fresh and purpose fired; Our guiding light, our fated star. For thee our love where e’er we are. Oh, Alma Mater’s sons afar Pledge faith and love where e’er we are.

Verse #1 I found a start at Dean, A beginning, not an end. An open mind, a chance to learn A family and a friend. Lessons taught and lessons learned Where knowledge sets me free, And now I am Dean College history. Refrain The future lies before me, It’s time to carry on, I trust that Dean has helped to light my way. I will embrace the future, but I won’t forget the past. For the memories I made at Dean, A lifetime they will last.

Verse #2 And now my heart’s with Dean, A beginning, not an end. An open mind, a chance to learn My family and my friend. Lessons taught and lessons learned, Where knowledge sets me free, And now Dean College is a part of me.

Historical Notes on Academic Regalia

Academic costumes originated in the Middle Ages, when scholarly institutions were religious or monastic and the daily attire of teachers, scholars, and students was that of the religious orders. Today’s ceremony continues that tradition of pageantry. As the ancient European universities became secularized, they adopted their own version of academic dress. Modeled upon their clerical predecessors, these costumes became elaborate, with bright, distinctive collars and gowns, often embellished with fur, gold chains and braid, and topped with elaborate hats with feathers. In the United States, solemn clerical black academic dress predominated in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1895, a standardized code was accepted by a majority of American colleges and universities. By that code, slightly revised in 1932, the academic attire is designed to reflect both the level of a degree and the institution that granted the degree. Dean College Regalia Dean College graduates wear maroon-colored caps and gowns with an embroidered Dean College seal on the left lapel. Baccalaureate degree gowns are distinguished from associate degree gowns by the addition of piping down the front of the robe. Dean faculty and staff wear academic regalia appropriate to their highest degree earned. You will see bachelor’s degree robes with pointed sleeves, master’s degree robes with oblong sleeves, and doctor’s degree robes with bell-shaped sleeves trimmed with three velvet chevrons. The hoods they wear are lined with the official colors of the university that conferred their degree, with the edging color indicating the discipline of the degree. The President and the Chair of the Board of Trustees wear special gowns to signify their roles. The Chair wears a black doctoral gown with burgundy velvet chevrons and wears a distinctive shield-style hood. The unique features of the President’s gown are the addition of the fourth chevron to each sleeve and a medallion featuring the College’s seal. The official colors of fields of learning most often represented in an academic procession are:

Brown Fine Arts, Architecture Citron Social Work Copper Government, History, Law Enforcement, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology Drab (Light Olive Brown) Commerce, Business, Accountancy Economics Dark Blue

Golden Yellow Science Green Medicine Lemon Library Science

Peacock Blue Public Administration Pink Music Purple Law Sage Green Physical Education Scarlet Theology White Arts, Humanities, Letters, Liberal Studies
