est melody from all their ranks, to Him as the Lamb that was slain. . . . The transac tions of Calvary shall be remembered, and the wonders of Tabor outdone, in the Canaan above. . . . Thus, while He who was crucified is Himself glorified, all who have clung to His cross shall be exalted to His throne.— D avid D avidson . “Who led thee through that great and terrible zvilderness , . . . Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, . . . that he might humble thee,, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end" (Deut. 8 : 15,16). “To do thee good” ! Nay, not to do us ill! Alas, we have so oft misunderstood ! Much that has come in His unerring will We have concluded was not for our good. “To do thee good” ! ’Tis ever so with Him ; “To do thee good” is ever His design ; We have not known; our eyesight hath been dim ; And we have blindly challenged love divine ! “To do thee good” ! Nay, not to take away ! “To do thee good” in ways we cannot tell. Shall we not humbly, worshipfully say : “My God, work on! Thou doest all things well !” — J . D an son S m it h . SEPTEMBER 11 “Fear Not” “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee” (Deut. 31:6). How blessed to feel assured that the Lord is with us in all our ways, and con descends to go down into our humiliations and banishments with us ! Even beyond the ocean, our Father’s lovç beams like the sun in its-strength. We cannot hesitate to go where Jehovah promises His presence. “Fear not,” is the Lord’s command. Reader, go forward, and fear not. It is a happy thing when we can address the Lord with the confidence which David mani fested ; it gives us great power in prayer, and comfort in trial. “On thee do I wait all the day.”— C harles H addon S purgeon . SEPTEMBER 12 . The Driving Power of Spiritual Compassion “When he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd" (Matt. 9 :36), We read of our Lord Jesus Christ that when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd. The Greek verb that is used in this connec tion is very vivid and impressive. Quite literally, it means that He was swept along with compassion because of what He saw. It is safe to say that His people, to whom He has entrusted His mission in this pres ent generation, will never be able to ac complish much for their Master until they are possessed by the same compassionate sympathy.— Life of Faith. SEPTEMBER 10 To Do Thee Good

So again, we sing; Yes ; but the winds are no more commissioned to carry thè mes sage than the angels are. That is left to redeemed sinners such as ourselves.......... And to what purpose will the waters roll, unless they carry on their bosoms the ships of Christian nations, and on those ships the bodies of living Christian messengers ? —W. S. H ooton . SEPTEMBER 7 Counted Loss “That I may know him" (Phil. 3:10). This desire to know Jesus must have behind it some dominating principle or motive. What impels the apostle thus ? We might as well ask the child what impels it to its mother. The mother’s bosom is the child’s heaven on earth. The little one nestles there, is safe there, is nourished there, rests there. The sweetness and om nipotence of divine love are strange to us until we know Jesuit? He is our life. But, like all knowledge worth having, this knowledge must be paid for. Listen! “What things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.” Position, influ ence, authority, prospects, wealth, pride, self-righteousness—Paul gathered up into one promiscuous heap, and then labeled them all—LOSS. Why loss? Ah, they had hidden Christ from his eager soul. Every thing is loss, and must be treated as loss, which does that.— H andley C. G. M oule . SEPTEMBER 8 Living unto the Lord "For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s" (Rom. 14:8). We live unto the Lord when the law of Christ is the rule by which we regulate our conduct...........The man who lives untò the Lord employs every method which rea son or Scripture suggests to direct his thoughts to the noblest objects of contem plation, to regulate his affections, to re strain his appetites, to govern his passions, . . . and to acquire and cherish the graces and virtues of Christian character. . . . His mind delights to dwell on those views of the moral attributes of Jehovah which are exhibited in the works of creation and providence, in the economy of grace, and in the character of our blessed Lord. While he thus beholds the glory and the grace of the God whom he adores and loves, he is changed into .the same image, and forgetting the things which are be hind, he reaches forward to those that are before, and presses on toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.— J o h n H unter . SEPTEMBER 9 Transfiguration “I f we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: I f we suffer, we shall also reign with him” (2 Tim. 2:11, 12). Such a scene as that exhibited on the Mount of Transfiguration we are not per mitted to witness—such a magnificent ap pearance to behold, or such a lofty dis course to hear, as were seen and heard by Peter and James and John; but a scene that exceeds it far shall at length burst upon our view, for when we pass into the world of spirits, we shall see Jesus as He is—in the full effulgence of His divinity, encompassed by the myriads of those He redeemed on Calvary—and shall hear the acclamations of praise that rise in sweet-
