Vega: precision solutions for extreme conditions From corrosive acids to volatile hydrocarbons, VEGA's advanced instrumentation delivers dependable performance for the complex measurement requirements of chemical storage facilities.
C hemical storage sites, whether han- dling raw materials, intermediates or finished products, face complex measurement requirements due to the wide range of substances stored. These can include corrosive acids, alkalis, volatile hydrocarbons and toxic chemicals, all of which need specialised measuring solutions. VEGAPULS radar sensors, VEGABAR pres- sure transmitters and VEGASWING level switches can deliver the precise and reliable measurements these sites need. The VEGAPULS 6X radar sensor uses an 80 GHz radar beam to deliver a highly focused signal, which significantly reduces the risk of interference from tank walls or internal fixtures such as mixers and coils. This advanced radar technology enables precise detection of liquid surfaces in storage tanks, regardless of their shape or the presence of internal obstructions. For reliable pressure measurement in chemical storage, the VEGAFLEX 81 stands out as a robust solution. Meanwhile, the VEGABAR 80 series offers a flexible ap- proach by combining pressure sensors with level-measurement systems. By integrating VEGABAR transmitters with VEGAPULS radar sensors, operators gain real-time, comprehensive insights into tank conditions, greatly enhancing safety. The VEGABAR 83 is particularly notable for its ceramic-capacitive sensor technology. This feature enables this pressure device to measure gases, vapours, and liquids accurate- ly, even under extreme pressure conditions. Its rugged ceramic cell construction offers excellent resistance to corrosion and abra- sion, making it ideal for tanks storing reactive substances like acids and alkalis. Known for its
precision and lasting stability, the VEGABAR 83 is a reliable choice for monitoring both process pressures and hydrostatic levels in demanding chemical environments. Continuous level measurement and point- level detection play a huge role in safety, pro- viding critical alarms for high and low levels in chemical tanks. The VEGASWING range uses vibration technology, in which the device’s fork vibrates until it touches the liquid, trig- gering an alarm immediately upon contact. This approach remains reliable under extreme temperature and pressure conditions. The VEGASWING 63 functions as a uni - versal level switch for all liquids, including hazardous chemicals, offering millimetre- accurate detection regardless of installation position. It covers a variety of tasks, such as empty/full detection, overfill protection, dry-run prevention, and pump safeguarding, with its switching point easily set via a tube extension. Its robust design ensures reliable operation across multiple scenarios. VEGA’s measurement technologies work independently of environmental factors com- mon in chemical storage. Non-contact solu - tions decrease wear and exposure, lowering maintenance costs and reducing downtime. Sensors and transmitters integrate smoothly into process control systems. With digital communication options like HART, Profibus and Foundation Fieldbus, users can monitor levels and pressures remotely, boosting efficiency and support- ing predictive maintenance. Advanced diagnostics further speed up troubleshoot- ing and optimise operations, minimising disruptions. Safety is always non-negotiable; VEGAPULS 6X and VEGABAR 83 are certi -
fied for hazardous zones and meet global standards such as ATEX and IECEx, suited for explosive or corrosive environments. By implementing VEGA’s solutions, chemical plants can handle even the most demanding storage challenges. Through rugged engineering, chemical resistance and strict safety standards, VEGA remains a trusted provider of measurement instru- mentation for the chemical industry. VEGA will be exhibiting at Electra Mining Africa 2026 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec, from Monday, 7 September to Friday, 11 September 2026: Stand B15, Hall 4. https://www.vega.com/en-za
VEGAPULS 6X sensor is an 80 GHz, non- contact radar level measurement device that is unaffected by tank internals or vapour.
The VEGAFLEX Series 80 guided radar sensors use a cable or rod probe to guide the radar pulse to the product surface. This enables accurate tank level determination, with buildup, steam or dust ignored.
Mobile bag dump station for total dust containment A new dust-free mobile bag dumping station with a glove box system has been released by FLEXICON, which isolates bulk material from the operator and the plant environment throughout the opening, dumping and compac- tion of bags, as well as the downstream convey- ing of material. retrieve bags through a hinged door on the hood’s sidewall, placing them onto a grate for opening and emptying without direct skin contact. Emptied bags are then passed through a second hinged door on the opposite sidewall into the integrated bag compactor, streamlining disposal.
disconnect fittings for fast replacement. The high-capacity cylinder on the bag compactor can compress up to 80 bags into a removable bin. Safety interlocks on the compactor’s main door and the flapper door linking it to the dust hood prevent operation unless both doors are securely closed. Material flows from the hopper into the screw conveyor's charging adapter. A stain- less-steel screw with a specialised geometry effectively handles both free- and non-free- flowing bulk materials, including those prone to packing, caking, smearing, seizing or fluidis - ing, without causing blend separation. https://www.flexicon.co.za/
