six years of breeding and selection to arrive at the stage of winning from over 500 miles, but that it was done efficiently is shown by the consistency with which he has been winning since then. Management Living in the country, as he does, the system is open hole and hopper feeding. The area surrounding is complete freedom and I can well imagine how they fly themselves into condition. The birds selected for the longer races are mated late, then feed two young- sters in their first nest, one in the second; thereafter being given two inland races; the first of these being Preston or Stafford. Sid Newcombe is a ‘bitter end’ flyer, his young- sters have to complete the programme, year- lings to Bournemouth and 2yo’s to Dol. Mind you, I handled one or two latebreds which were being put aside. Feeding Sid mixes his feed with a shovel, but what I saw was top quality. During the racing season his mixture is three beans, one wheat, one maize and one maple peas. After the moult this is reduced by cutting out the peas and adding some barley and oats. Conclusion What I have written above was extracted from Sid in easy stages. He is a quiet and unassuming fancier. I must confess that until now Sid Newcombe had just been a name which was appearing with more and more frequency in the big events, but from meeting chaps of this kind, a humble scribe’s job can be so very pleasant. The Bairn I have added a photo to go with this story. This is some of the top prize winners and trophies in Corstorphine HS, Messrs Watt, Main, Newcombe & Fairbairn & Partner. Taken in April 1966. £419), 214th, 21st Nantes (and £147); 1958 – 469th Rennes; 1959 7th and 9th Dol E of S, 6th and 469th Open Rennes; 1960 153rd Rennes, 17th Open YB Derby Christchurch; 1961 3rd Rennes (and £235) also 141st, 260th and 117th Nantes, 13th Section YB National. You will see that it took

from the McNeill hen and the Leishman cock. A really outstanding proposition, with an exceptional eye, a broad full-circle, serrated. Positions won: 1953 – 43rd Section, 94th Open Nantes; 1956 – 10th, 93rd, 207th and 468th Rennes; 1957 – 98th Rennes (and

Andrew Smillie & Son of Fauldhouse. Admittedly, the major wins have been with hens. First to be presented was the Leishman red hen, 52N W3099, a daughter of ‘Holm Queen’, six times across the Channel including 14th, 28th and 78th Open. Then, of course, came the mealy hen, 57ED1512, winner of 3rd Open Rennes in 1961. She is quite a big hen, with a full dark circle, well serrated. From the Leishman red hen and the Flockhart mealy cock, ‘151 2’ has bred three birds to take positions in the M-L Federation Bournemouth race. Blue chequer w/f hen, 59ED661, a beau- tiful hen which could win in a show pen. She is from a Kirkpatrick/Leishman/Flockhart combination. She was 141st Rennes in 1961 winning £255. Blue chequer hen, 59ED698, winner of 30th East of Scotland Dol and £120. Another big ’un, an untrained late bred out to Bournemouth as a yearling, she is a Bradshaw/Tremmery and the sire a sister of his good hen ‘1447’. Into the cocks we found blue white flight 59ED618, his dam was the blue hen which was 9th Dol in 1959. He is a Flockhart/Leishman/McNeill. Flown Bournemouth as a youngster and yearling, he was clocked on the day from Dol in 1961 and sent back to Nantes and again clocked. I was particularly struck with a red cock, P61ML4400, his winner of 13th Section Usher’s YB Cheltenham National WITHOUT LIMITS RACING COCKS
