CONTINUING MY CHEERING JOURNEY

By Lauren Fucci

My name is Lauren Fucci and I’m a cheerleader at Mepham High School where I am a base on the varsity cheerleading team. I have been cheering for the past 5 years with my team where I have accomplished regional championships 2 years in a row and 17th in our division at nationals in Florida. About 2 years ago I became a patient at Farmingdale Physical Therapy West when I obtained an injury to my neck. One of my teammates fell on me and caused me to have a concussion, herniated discs and a pinched nerve. This injury held me back from improving my basing skills and performing at nationals during my first year on varsity. Many peers, teammates and coaches doubted I’d be able to come back from this injury. Thanks to my Physical Therapists at Farmingdale Physical Therapy West for helping me strengthen myself and return to my team. I was able to move on and cheer in college. Without their intelligence and dedication for my well- being, I would have never been able to continue my cheering journey.

Long Island’s Top PT Clinic! HELPING YOUR ACHES AND PAINS

Dear Valued Client,

2. Don’t underestimate the power of resting! Your body relies on sleep just as much as your brain. You need to get plenty of sleep to keep your stress level at a minimum—and that includes your physical stress level. Aim to sleep between 7-9 hours every night. The more activity you engage in, the more sleep you need. 3. Keep your body in good shape with regular exercise. It may seem counterintuitive to cut down on pain by moving more, but exercise is a really good way to reduce aches and pains. When you exercise every day, you are able to train your muscles for more movement, and thereby reduce aches and pains. Keeping active, staying rested, and being smart with hot and cold therapy create a trifecta for healthy management of aches and pains, but they aren’t going to solve the bigger problems. When aches and pains start to grow severe or chronic, it is time to reach out to a professional for support. Physical therapy is the best way to reduce aches and pains because it takes into account a combination of active and passive strategies to help tackle the cause of your pain. Look inside to learn more about our programs and say goodbye to aches and pain!

Painmedicationscan re duce the severity of aches and pains for a little while, but they don’t do anything to resolve the issue. There are things that you can do at home that can alleviate your aches and pains, helping to reduce the severity of your discomfort while also reducing the likelihood that the pain will return.

HENRY“BUTCH”PURSLOW, DPT

Don’t just complain about those aches and pains. Start doing something about them. Here are some things you can do at home to reduce your daily pain: 1. Use hot and cold therapy appropriately to reduce inflammation. After a good workout or a day of doing chores out in the yard, your muscles will likely feel sore. Apply ice directly to the area that hurts on and off for 20 minutes at a time during the first 24-72 hours after the pain develops. After that, consider soaking in hot water such as taking a warm bath to further soothe your muscles.

WHY Physical Therapy?

There are a lot of different reasons as to why you may start feeling aches and pains. Muscle pain will occur whenever your muscles start to grow. To build more muscle mass, your muscles have to stretch, and lactic acid can pour into the lining of your muscles to cause a burning sensation. More movement will push that acid out, helping you to experience relief. Over time your muscles will develop increased elasticity and the burning sensation won’t be so severe. Built-up tension from stress or overuse, and muscle pain from poor posture can also contribute to regular pain. A physical therapist can take a comprehensive assessment to help determine what may be the primary cause behind your aches and pains. Working with a physical therapist can help you develop a new approach to managing your aches and pains. Your physical therapy program will likely take into account strategies like hydrotherapy, deep tissue massage, guided stretching and targeted movements to help you experience ongoing relief from regular discomfort. Give us a call so we can help you say goodbye to your aches and pains.

Healthy Recipe: Gluten-Free Pumpkin Cookies

Ingredients • 1 ripe banana, mashed • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree • 2 large eggs • 1/2 cup peanut butter • 3 tbsp coconut oil, melted

• 1/2 cup oat flour, ground • 1/2 cup almond meal • 1/2 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1/8 tsp salt

• 2 tsp Vietnamese 5% Oil • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon • 1/4 tsp Frontier allspice • 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips • 1/2 cup dried cranberries & cherries

• 2 tsp vanilla extract • 3 tbsp maple syrup • 1 1/2 cups gluten-free rolled oats

Directions Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease or line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Set aside. In a mixing bowl stir together mashed banana, pumpkin, eggs, peanut butter, coconut oil, vanilla and maple syrup until well combined. Add in oats, oat flour, almond meal, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, allspice, chocolate chips and dried fruit; stir to combine. Refrigerate for 5 minutes to harden. Drop cookies by spoonfuls on prepared baking sheet. They won’t expand much, so feel free to press them down, slightly, and make them as uniform as possible to ensure even baking. Bake for about 12 minutes until lightly browned.

Employee Of The Month

ANTHONY LICARI

“Starting physical therapy was something I was very nervous about. In October 2017, I got in an accident and broke my calcaneus. My first day at therapy, I was on a peg leg and could barely put any weight down on my enormous foot. Stephanie, who was my therapist throughout my visits, first greeted me. She walked me through what I had to do very well and she made it a point to really work on places that hurt more than others. She was great! As the therapy progressed and I started to walk again, we changed all of the exercises; now at the end, the only thing that stayed the same is the stimulation and massage. I think the circuit worked well, as I am able to run a mile continuously now. Also, the rest of the staff was great!” - Carl P. “I think the circuit worked well, as I am able to run a mile continuously now.”

When asked what his favorite food was, Anthony said sushi and popcorn but that if he could choose a candy it would be Gushers. In his free time, Anthony likes to take dance classes, sing or perform live. When not performing he likes to run, and do yoga. His favorite part of working at FPTW are his friendly coworkers.

What do you like to do when you’re not at PT? I keep very busy when not at PT. I have two children and two dogs. I also help out with a few different charitable organizations as well as being active in different charities in my children’s school district. I love to bake, travel and enjoy time w/ friends and family. What is your favorite part about coming here? All of the staff is so friendly, compassionate and knowledgeable. Even when I am having a difficult pain day, I leave feeling better emotionally as well as physically.

How long have you been a patient here? I have been coming to PT on and off over 11 years to treat and manage my systemic rheumatiod arthritis. The past year I made a commitment to come consistently each week. Coming to PT, coupled with my medication and eating right, is the perfect combination to help me feel well.
