boosters for the W. C. T. U. and such organizations (????), and this thing of the Bible favoring the use of wine is one thing that their sensitive moral natures cannot tolerate. True, the Orientals used light wines freely, good water being difficult to obtain in many places, and drunk enness was not common. Where did Mr. Pontius learn that the guests of the marriage feast were drunk when Jesus made the good wine? The record says that “the governor of the feast” jokingly remarked that the poor wine was usually kept until last after the good had been “well drunk,” but that in this case, the purest wine had been reserved until last (Jno. 2:10). There is not a hint that the guests were intoxicated. Then there is Paul’s advice to his friend Timothy in a personal letter, “Use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities” (1 Tim. 5:23). We have known of some Atheists who have taken Paul’s prescrip tion without regard to the word “little,” although they were not suffering from Timothy’s stomach complaint. Paul was prescribing for one whose condition he knew, and advised it as a remedy, not as an indulgence. —No. '4— “The Bible upholds cruelty to animals. Millions of animals have been sacri-

OLY Bible in a Nutshell” is the title of a leaflet being circulated among school children by the Junior Atheists League, a branch of the organ ization which would moré' properly be named “The Anti-American Association for the Ad vancement of Atheism.” This leaflet purports to set forth several hundred con tradictions and inconsistencies,-—and all in the shell of a “nut.” There is not a thing in it but has been adequately answered a thousand times, and if any reader would take the trouble to turn- to.the Bible or a good commentary, his difficulties would be over. The damaging value of the leaflet lies in the fact that

Atheist is guilty of the same cruelty every time he goes to the meat market. How would the slaughter of lambs at the Passover compare with the slaughter of lambs in the United States in one day, to supply the demands of the packing houses ? —No. 5— "“The Bible says that the earth is flat and has four corners.” Proof—Isa. 11:13— ‘‘He shall gather together the dispersed o f Israel from the four corners of the earth.” Here a proverbial expression is used even as it is still used, and the word rendered “corners” could just as well be rendered “quarters.” Mr. Pontius doesn’t see fit to quote Prov. 8 :27— “He set a compass (literally “cir cle” ) on the face of the deep,” or Isa. 40:22— “I t is He that sitteth upon the circle (literally “sphere” ) o f the earth,” or Deut. 4 :19, where we are told that the stars of the heavens are “divided unto all nations under the heavens,” which would be impossible if the earth were flat, for all nations would see the same stars. Nor did he say anything about Lk. 17:34-3,6, which -tells us that when the Lord comes, it will be night in one part of the earth, morn ing in another part and noonday in another, a statement which would be absurd were the earth flat. • ** ' —No. 1— " ■“The Bible sustains prostitution.” Abraham defiled Hagar. David defiled Uriah. The writer says not a word about the Bible record of the punishment that came to both of these offenders for their disobedience to God. Why not quote David’s Psalms of penitence? (Psa. 32 and 51). —No. 2— “Ruth went to bed with her cousin. This leaves bad blood in the Christians’ Savior.” Why didn’t Mr. Pon tius explain that the Palestine custom was to winnow The grain ' on the threshing floor at night when the night breezes blew through the barn, and that when the workers were tired out it was their habit to lie down for the rest of the night upon the straw. Nothing was thought of it in those times and there is not a hint of immorality in the story. Furthermore, Mr. Pontius had probably not heard that Jesus was not born of human bloods but con ceived of the Holy Spirit: —No. 3— “The Bible commands and upholds drunkenness. Jesus made wine for people who were already drunk and Paul said, ‘Drink no more water but take wine!’ ” Our readers have probably noticed that Atheists have always been strong advocates of prohibition.
