D ecember 8 "Cunning to work in . . . . blue." -2 Chron. 2:7.

JUST IN TIME FO R CH R I S T M A S = = THE BEST, the Choicest Gift of All—a Nice BIBLE W e have a la rg e stock of Bibles, in a g re at v a rie ty of p rices— and h e re a re th ree p a rticu la rly good values. THE HOLY BIBLE—

ALL his arts would have been incomplete, and therefore valueless, for the building of the Temple if he had not been able to work in blue. For blue, in the Bible, is the ritual emblem of love, and no Divine Sanctuary can be raised by him who does not know how to work in love. A very stately edifice may be erected of gold and silver and iron and stone, but it will be empty ®r-it will not be the Tabernacle of the Highest—if it be not adorn ed with love. Blue! Emblem.of the heavens, dissolving into soft showers of penitence or praise; reminding us of the overarching love of God that enfolds us everywhere; leading our thoughts upwards to the sapphire throne—the symbol at once of affection and of power—upon which He sits to rule and save the world. Love! The mightiest force in the universe; the sun that melts the iceberg of the impenitent soul,, and that causes the cold heart to glow with fervent zeal. There is no temple if these thoughts and this force be absent; he is no temple-builder who is not “cunning to work in blue.” This talent, like those of Hiram and Bezaleel, is a Divine gift. None are cunning to work in love without His endowment; it is far too delicate and elusive a. material for successful handling by untrained human fingers. Not only kind- hearted, but “wise-hearted,” must be the artificers of the Temple of the LORD. Wise-hearted with wisdom that is not of earth. The indenture to the craft is the giving of ourselves to Christ ; the apprenticeship consists in letting the Divine love fill our oWii hearts; the certificate of skilful craftmanship is the gentle spirit that seeks, not to drive, but to woo and lead men into the secret place of the Most High. M D ecember 9 “The robe of the ephod, all of blue." —Ex. 28:31. THIS robe was “without seam, woven from the top without,” and was therefore practically without beginning and without, end. Moreover precautions were taken that it should never be rent. Once again we must remind ourselves that blue is the Bible em blem of love. The robe of the ephod, therefore, typified the love of the Great High Priest of our profession; without beginning and without end; reaching down from the Head to all the Mem bers and enwrapping them in its azure folds. A more beautiful symbol, a more comforting thought, it would be difficult to con ceive. We are all enveloped and embraced in the changeless, seamless robe of Christ’s tender affection. His love for us, like eternity, is ,without commencement and without termination; it was not rent even in the hour of His crucifixion (see Jno. 19:23- 24). It stretches down to the humblest of us; it at once protects and adorns each member of that “company of all faithful peo ple” which is His body, even the (spiritual) Church. Upon the hem of this robe of the ephod were hung golden bells and pome granates—beauty, fruitfulness, and “holy mirth” are the blessings which come to us through the love of our risen Lord. We say our risen Lord, for the High Priest did not assume this robe on the Day of Atonement until the sacrifice had been offered and the blood had been sprinkled before the Mercy Seat. In His gar ments of humiliation Christ brought us life by the offering of Himself and the effusion of His blood; beauty, fruit, music, are His gifts now that He has entered the Holy of Holies and re turned to bless us in His apparel of glory and of love.
