SUPPOSE He were to come down for the same purpose today;, what would He see? Long before what we may call His permanent incarnation, He used at times to appear to men in human form—we sometimes wonder whether He does so still. What a possibility! that one of those before whom this day or yesterday we played the fool; or the beggar whom we so roughly repulsed; or the apparent sufferer with whom we would not sympathize; or the person who appeared to be in distress, but whom we refused to help—might have been our Lord and Mas- , ter, come down “to see” ! The thought may be fanciful (we are not at all sure that it is) but certainly not fantastic. At least one must admit its possibility-—He used to do it, and He is “the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” It is idle to argue that there is no need on His part for such a descent; there was none on the occasion referred to in the tex t! What a difference it would make, both to us and our cities, if we were sure that it were actually the .case. If we knew that at any hour He Him self might pass unrecognized through our streets; that at any moment we might unconsciously be in His localized presence, perhaps have personal dealings with Him without being aware of the fact, how many a- civic abuse would be swept away, how constantly we should be on our best behavior. Yet amendment, for such a reason, would display the height of folly if He does not descend, at least He sees! Whatever we should do, either as citizens or as individuals, in the one case, it behooves us to do in the other. Of this we may be sure: if we do not meet Him, we shall meet one of “the least of His brethren,” and our attitude to them will be counted as our attitude to Himself. HR D ecember 20 “Few and evil have the days . . . of my life been.” —Gen. 47:9. JACOB had lived a hundred and thirty years; he had had wives, and sons and daughters, oxen and asses and sheep, menj| servants and women-servants; above all, he had had a vision of God; yet he was not satisfied: he describes his days as few and evil. The truth was, he lacked that contented spirit which is “a continual feast.” There are far too many men and women like Jacob upon earth. They are neyer happy; things are never right for them; they are forever railing at life and all that is in it. Surely no one has been so ill-used as they ! Providence seems to have a special grudge against them. They can see no cause for gratitude or praise anywhere. Their verdict concerning the cir cumstances of their life is: “All these things are against me. This is a habit of mind against which we should be constantly on our guard. The perpetual pessimist not only, spoils his own. life, he is .a constant trial to those with whom he has to do. A Novem ber fog is luminous and cheering compared with the men and women who have a grievance to air whenever you have the .mis fortune to be in their company. Moreover, such people are de frauding God every day of the glory due unto His name. They are the continual recipients of a thousand blessing« and mercies at His hand, and they neither appreciate His goodness nor offer to Him thanks, for all the manifestations of His love. There are dark days in every life, but, at least in the majority of cases, they are far outnumbered by the bright ones, and even the darkest have their mitigations. Happy is- he who can say: “The other side of every cloud is bright and shining;
