D ecember 21 “The LORD blessed Obed-Edom and all his household ”4-:\ 2 Sam. 6 :11. OBED-EDOM was a Canaanite and therefore, probably, at one time an idolater. But when he opened his house for the re ception of the Ark of the Presence, God’s blessing rested upon him and his. It is ever so. That house is sure to be blessed which becomes the resting-place of the Highest, Obed-Edom might have been excused if he had refused to shelter the Sacred Chest. To all appearances it was a dangerous inmate. Uzza had just been destroyed for daring to touch it, and the Philistines had found it a very troublesome possession when it had been carried into their coasts. There was nothing, however, of the bravado of the Philistines, or of the. rashness of Uzza in this Gittite. He dared in all humility to offer hospitality to the LORD of Hosts; he was willing to risk the consequences for the sake of the service which he could render; and the Heavenly Visitant deigned to accept the shelter of his roof and, since He will be no man’s debtor, repaid Obed-Edom a thousand-fold for the reverent welcome that was given to the Ark. No man can render any service to, or dare anything for, God without being the richer and the happier for the service or the risk. No house shall be so abundantly endowed as that into which the Divine has been invited as an honored Guest. Not only was Obed-Edom blessed, but all his household. If we would secure the highest well being of those we love, we should seek it along the line.of service and sacrifice. The presence of the Ark will hallow our homes, and bring us and ours a heritage of spiritual and temporal safety, of peace and enrichment, which cannot be obtained by all the efforts of the worldling, and which is denied to the un sanctified heart and house. STRENGTH, gladness, beauty (cf. Ps. 104:15), God’s three good gifts to man. Each has its spiritual counterpart; the corn and wine are emblematic of the body and blood of Christ, the oil typifies the Holy Ghost. Strength and gladness come to us from a participation in the life of the Redeemer; spiritual beauty is produced by the possession of the fulness of the Spirit of God. Without these three necessaries of existence, life would be im possible, or it would be at once feeble, dreary and unattractive. Moreover, that our life may be vigorous, exhilarating, vivid, there must be not only a plentiful supply, but a constant and unstinting assimilation on our part of the corn and wine and oil. The abundant and eternal provision has been insured by the Lord of the Harvest, but the voice of supplication and'the hand of faith must be exercised that the reception may be equal to our daily needs. Strength, gladness, beauty—there need be no lack of these in any Christian life : there is ‘'Enough for each, enough for all, Enough forevermore.” If we are feeble, desponding, unadorned, the fault is entirely our own. The divine garner is ever full, the wine-press over flowing, the Unction inexhaustible. Nor can we plead our pov erty ; there is nothing to pay ; the sustenance and the anointing are Heaven’s free largess. We are the pensioners of *an Almoner Who “giveth liberally to all men and upbraideth not.” Let us then seek this joy, this loveliness, this power, both for our own sakes and for the glory of our Lord. D ecember 22 "Corn and wine and oil.’’— Ps. 4 :7.
