Light On The Child’s Path By Wm . A . Bixler
ARTIN LUTHER was nine years; old, the son of a poor German miner, when Columbus discovered America. The young lad was re ceiving his initiation into an age big with promise, though superstitious and bigoted in the extreme; the achievement of the bold navigator heralded the dawn that was to bring the awaken ing of the western world from its medieval slumber. The interchange of thought between Orient and Occi dent occasioned by the Crusades, stimulated further by the fall of Constantinople, was a leading cause that brought about the renaissance in art Kind literature. Alchemy was being metamorphosed into the true science of chemistry. Astrology was vanishing before the advances of astron omy. Copernicus,, ten years older than Luther, was about to give to the world his startling theories regarding the solar ¡system. The printing press was becoming a mighty force in disseminating knowledge . In England, Wyclif had translated the Bible info, the language of the people, and his writings had caused con cern at Rome by his advocacy of Scriptural authority and hi§ questioning of the doctrine oh Transubstantiation. The Lollard movement thus generated spread widely to many parts of Europe and especially influenced John Hus and tus followers in Bohemia. Hus suffered martyrdom at the stake in 1415; but “the blood of the martyrs has ever been the seed Of the church;’ and the fire broke out anew ate in the 15th century, in Italy, where Savonarola was thun dering the truth from his pulpit at the very time of Luther’s boyhood. The world was being prepared for the Reformation. , I ,. , • In an old Protestant ’ service book, discovered in Prague, there is a picture that illustrates the growth o these movements from the 14th to the 15th Century. A the top is Wyclif, kindling a fire^-lower down is Hus, fanning the spark. Below, We see Luther, holding aloft a flaming torch. E nters a M onastery After several years in the university at Erfurt, Luther gave up the law, and, brought to a decision, by the death of a friend who was struck by lightning as he stood beside him entered an Augustinian monastery. Here he dis covered a Latin Bible—the first he had ever seen. At first hand, from the'Word of God, he learned that man is not saved by singing Masses, but by the infinite grace of Cod. He was delivered from darkness. He was converted. His unshakable faith in the Bible was established. The storm broke in 1517 with Luthers protest against “indulgences” and other corruption in the church, some of which he was appalled to observe on a visit to Rome. The hour had struck—and God’s man was ready to step into the arena. Summoned before Emperor Charles V, at the Diet of Worms in 1521, he defended himself in a speech _of two hours, acknowledging human frailty as far as his own writings were concerned, and the consequent possibility of error, but standing like a rock as to the authority of the
