THE K I NG ' S BUS I NES S

85 In looking over our index of contri butors to the King’s Business, we were impressed with the long list of devo tional writers whose names begin with “M.” Among them are Moody, Morgan, Meyer, Muller, McIntosh, Maclaren, Marsh, Murray, McNeil, Munhall, Mc- Nicol, Mauro. What an influence for godliness the writings of all these men have had upon the world. Someone points out th a t after a man has been “roasted” by his critics, and has been in a “stew” because of his mis fortunes all his life, the first words he hears when he gets to heaven are, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” The editor of London Punch refers to the Lord’s Day as the “Day of Unrest.” After referring to the shrine of pleas ure which has proved unsatisfactory, to sport which has lost-its glamor, to mo toring which is beginning to lose its lure, he ends up in this satirical way: Well, my friend, if fresh sensation The curious thing is th a t Sunday is the only dull day as a rule, for those who find no delight in the house of God. The true Christian is able to say, “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord.” We’ll have to hand the banner to the ladies for one thing anyway—they com prise 85 per cent, of the membership of the Christian Science churches, accord ing to latest statistics. In the evangeli cal denominations, there has been a great proportionate gain of men, the fig ures being 43 per cent men and 57 per cent women. Either more men are join ing the evangelical churches or a lot of women have gone over to “Mother Eddy.” The skeptical professors in Cornell and some other colleges are beginning to see some of the fruit of their labors. Is the object of your search, And you want a consultation, My advice is—go to church.

AFTERTHOUGHTS

Just because a little bumblebee flew into a man’s face when he was driving his automobile, the car struck a pole, knocking the pole down and cutting off the entire electric supply from Cam bridge, Md. All-of which may be used as an illustration of the fact th a t one small sin becoming suddenly victorious over us, may turn the course of a life and ruin the current of Christian influ ence. A secular paper reported th a t at the Methodist General Conference the bish ops issued a statement declaring “A new age is here. We can’t go back to the less troubled days* We are a t a crisis.” One bishop pointed out th a t only a min ority of the world’s population are even nominally Christians and th a t Moham medanism is increasing more rapidly than Christianity is. Rather damaging admissions for Methodist bishops to be making, but they certainly came near agreeing with the Scriptures th a t time. John the Baptist has been very highly honored. Pope Benedict has named him patron saint of the movies. We can im agine what John would have to say about the modern movies, were he on the scene,—and about the gentleman on the Tiber also. It recently cost William Morris of New York $500 to find out that the ouija board is a liar. Morris’s wife, accord ing to the papers, lost her diamond ring. They got out the ouija board for coun sel, and the board spelled out the name “Cooper,” Morris’ life-long friend, as the one who took the ring. Morris went over and beat him up, and he was promptly arrested for it. The court de clined to accept ouija-board testimony and Cooper proved himself innocent. Morris had to settle.
