These are tributes to a remarkable woman who ruled like a matriarch over New York high society over a hundred years ago. Her name was Caroline Astor, the mother of the founder of St. Regis, John Jacob Astor. Her uncompromising attitude towards the pursuit of luxury and comfort set standards of service excellence by which St. Regis is still, proudly, bound. If only she could have known that across an ocean of time and space, her exacting standards would know no better setting than an island cocooned from the cares of the world.
