G reen B uildings Paseo Verde in Philadelphia is national model for green building Jonathan Rose Companies/APM project chosen as model for AIA course on sustainability P HILADELPHIA, PA — Paseo Verde, the transit-oriented, green

Env i ronmental l y con- science features include green and blue roofs, perme- able paving, water gardens to retain and manage water, solar panels and utilization of local, recyclable and renew- able components. Materials were also selected to reduce environmentally triggered health conditions, such as asthma. Located in adjacency to the Temple University train station, Paseo Verde provides its residents with accessible transportation to employment, shopping and family throughout the com- munity. “Paseo Verde is a blueprint for developing communities of opportunity,” said Jonathan Rose , president of Jonathan Rose Companies. “Literally touching the North Phila- delphia SEPTA station and adjacent to the educational and cultural resources of Temple University, the proj- ect provides green healthy, energy efficient housing for a range of family incomes. Together with on-site health and family services, Paseo Verde provides a complete community platform for its residents to thrive.” The two-hour course will cover: The innovative ap- proaches to the design of high performance multifam- ily housing using LEED for Homes and LEED for Homes Mid-Rise rating systems; ap- plying LEED ND concepts to evaluate development sites, shape development to en- courage pedestrian activity, and recognize principles of cohesive community design; how to conceive compre- hensive on-site stormwater management strategies in- corporating green roofs, blue roofs, and infiltration basins that work in concert with off-site green infrastructure to create high performance stormwater management systems; and how designing for healthy communities can encourage greater physical activity, socialization, and improved quality of life. Paseo Verde has been show- cased at the annual national Greenbuild conference and was awarded the 2013 Dela- ware Valley Regional Plan- ning Association’s Land Use Project of the Year, among other honors. n

Paseo Verde, which lit- erally means “green way,” provides energy efficient housing for 120 market-rate apartments as well as 30,000 s/f of commercial and com- munity space. The building hosts a primary care facility operated by Public Health Management Corporation, social services provided by APM and a pharmacy. An on-site education center also
