Our magnificent tour of the East of England includes the natural beauty of the Cambridgeshire Fens as well as the spectacular architecture and centuries-old heritage of its iconic cities. Going back in time, we will capture what life was like at the time of Cromwell with a visit to his family home, and marvel at East Anglia’s finest mansion, Audley End.

Our destination today is the Imperial War Museum Duxford , Britain’s best-preserved World War II airfield. Designed to spotlight the landmarks of British aviation history, the museum incorporates numerous exhibitions, including the historic Operations Block, the nerve centre of Duxford’s Battle of Britain campaign; AirSpace, home to 30 iconic aircraft like the Spitfire and Concorde; the American Air Museum featuring Europe’s biggest collection of US military aircraft, and Historic Duxford, which recalls wartime Today we visit the Wimpole Estate , a beautiful, 2,500-acre country estate presided over by the handsome, 17th-century Wimpole Hall. We can spend time exploring the impressive Georgian interiors of the hall, stroll the walled kitchen garden, savour the ancient parkland, and enjoy the gift shop and café. In the afternoon we head for Cambridge where we enjoy free time to stroll and sightsee as we wish. Day 4 Bletchley Park This morning, we make our way to Bletchley Park where Alan Turing and his colleagues helped crack Germany’s Enigma Code during World War II. We uncover Bletchley Park’s remarkable story by visiting the functional Codebreaking Huts and Blocks, Alan Turing’s office, the library, wartime garages (complete with WW II vehicles) and a series of compelling interactive exhibits before enjoying lunch (own expense) in Hut 4, formerly the home of the WWII Naval Intelligence Code Breaking Operations. This morning, we travel to the pretty medieval market town of Saffron Walden in Essex with free time to explore. Made prosperous in the 1500s for growing the prized spice of saffron, the town still retains beautiful historic buildings including St Mary’s Church and the Old Sun Inn. This afternoon we visit one of England’s most spectacular mansion houses and gardens, Audley End . Enjoy exploring its impressive great hall, state apartments, Gothic-style chapel and ‘below stairs’ service wing before strolling around the magnificent gardens designed by Capability Brown. Day 3 Cambridge at Leisure Today, we visit the world-famous university city of Cambridge with time at leisure to explore. You will be spoilt for choice of what to do and see in this compact city with the architectural splendour of its university colleges at the centre. Take a walking tour and see the instantly recognisable King’s College Chapel or relax with a guided punt on the River Cam. Many precious antiquities are on show at Cambridge University’s principal museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum or you might like a trip to the Botanic Gardens. Day 4 Ely & Oliver Cromwell’s House This morning, we will enjoy time at leisure in the cathedral city of Ely. Surrounded by the Fens, the UK’s second smallest city is famous for its magnificent Norman cathedral. This afternoon we visit Oliver Cromwell’s House . Here we learn more about the life of this fascinating historic figure and the part he played in the English Civil War with a special exhibition featuring impressive interactive displays. We will have the opportunity to try on costumes and experience life on the battlefields during the war. Day 5 Departure After breakfast, we make our way home.
