Gabriel, I always looked forward to our friendly turkey bowl. My friends and I went to a field and let loose with no-holds-barred tackle football. As I’ve become more mature, I stick to watching the pros, but I’ll always cherish those memories of running around, getting a little too rough, and having some laughs with my friends. On top of all these special traditions, I have a lot to be thankful for this year. I’m grateful to our wonderful community of patients for keeping the clinic busy and making work a joy. This year, I’ve focused on straightening my rudders, so to speak. I wake up every day with the mission to do my best. In return, I have faith that I’ll get the best results. And when it comes to patients and the team at Advance Physical Therapy, the best is definitely what I am fortunate enough to have. On a personal level, I’ve been very thankful that Michelle and I have been able to take care of my mother-in-law. We’ve built her a bungalow so that she has a space of her own, and it’s really nice to have her nearby. It’s really a gift to be able to help someone along. Counter to the stereotype, I couldn’t get along better with my mother-in-law. I want to wish everyone reading this a wonderful Thanksgiving. May your tables be stacked with delicious foods, and your seats filled with those closest to you. If you have a loved one that can’t make it this year, don’t forget to give them a call. SOME TURKEY, A LITTLE FOOTBALL, AND A NAP Giving Thanks for a Wonderful Yea r

When I think about my favorite holidays, Thanksgiving has to be near the top of the list. There’s no stress or extravagant pageantry, just a chance to spend some time with the people you care about most. Oh, and you to eat some great food and watch football. Who wouldn’t love that? In our house, Thanksgiving starts with breakfast. Every year I make a dish called Joe’s Special. The recipe was developed in the 1920s at a restaurant called New Joe’s in San Francisco. While that restaurant has been closed for decades, the specialty lives on at the Original Joe’s restaurants in California and at the Jones household. It’s basically scrambled eggs with ground beef, spinach, and spices. While I’d never claim to be a competent chef, I think I have this dish nailed down.

Michelle, my wife, is renowned for her pumpkin pie recipe. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. One of Michelle’s sisters also taught her a spinach soufflé recipe that has quickly become a staple. After we eat, there’s one last important tradition: my annual Thanksgiving nap. Sometimes we do a big family gathering, while other years it’s a more intimate affair.When Michelle’s sisters come up from California, they always play cards while the boys head off to the movies. No matter how many guests we expect, we always buy the biggest turkey possible, because leftovers are highly prized.We try to make them last as long as possible, but it’s rare that they make it to the NFL games on Sunday. If I have one last turkey sandwich during the college games on Saturday, I consider that a win.

The Truth About Turmeric THE SECRETS OF THE YELLOW SPICE

For thousands of years, sunny yellow turmeric has been a staple in curries as well as a spice renowned for its ability to treat a vast number of ailments. In recent years, this South Asian native has become a sort of “spice-of-all- trades.” Turmeric’s popularity has surged throughout North America. People are adding it to food and using it to treat everything from arthritis to heartburn. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the spice can treat just about every kind of inflammation, whether it’s joint pain or a headache. Have a stomachache or nausea? Try turmeric. Have a mild rash or burn on your skin? Try turmeric. Current studies are even looking into turmeric’s effectiveness as a treatment for diabetes and dementia.

When one substance is purported to have near-magical healing powers, you have to remember to take it with an additional dose of skepticism. Can one spice really cure everything that ails you? Let’s ask science. Researchers have identified over 20 distinct compounds that work similar to NSAIDs (such as aspirin and ibuprofen). Of those compounds, six are COX-2 inhibitors. COX-2 is an enzyme that causes inflammation and pain in the body. In short, these six compounds help block the enzymatic reaction that triggers inflammation. One of these compounds is called curcumin, which is often considered the active ingredient in turmeric. An article published in the medical journal Nutrition and Cancer found that, by weight, pure turmeric powder contains 3.14 percent curcumin.

However, clinical trials of curcumin have produced less-than-stellar results. A comprehensive review of 120 studies of curcumin, published in 2017 in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, found no evidence that the compound produced positive results as an anti-inflammatory or antioxidant. In fact, researchers found curcumin to be an, “unstable, reactive, non-bioavailable compound.” So what does this mean for people who use turmeric for its medicinal properties? If it works for you, continue to use it. If you’ve thought about adding it to your diet, give it a try. It’s safe to use, and studies have shown virtually no toxicity, even in high doses.

RECIPE: SLOW COOKER SWEET POTATO SOUP

My owners, Al and Michelle, always say that I’m my own dog. I’m not sure exactly what that means. I tend to pick up on their energy level toward me at any given time and try to react appropriately. You know, I look at them and wag my tail or walk between them and let them scratch my back. Sometimes I go to them immediately when they call, but depending on their tone of voice, sometimes not. Most of the time, I’ll run and chase a ball or some other toy, and if I make a good catch, I’ll release my “inner poodle” and give them a little poodle parade around the yard to make them really notice my talents. It makes them happy, and it makes me happy. Since I’m still pretty young, I get a little too full of myself sometimes. They get perturbed and try to tell me not to do something, but I do it anyway. I guess that’s why they say I’m my own dog. But what am I supposed to do when all I really hear when they’re talking is

“Harry, blah blah blah blah, Harry, blah blah blah blah.” I wish I could teach them how to speak dog. I’m kidding about teaching them dog, but dogs are like humans in a sense. For a good relationship to exist between dogs, or other pets (even cats), and humans, respect and positive energy toward each other is a winning formula, creating mutual happiness and contentment. That’s why I usually stop doing naughty dog things when they catch me. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. It opens the door for treats.

Ingredients

3 pounds sweet potatoes, roughly chopped

1 tablespoon garlic, minced

5 cups chicken or vegetable stock

1 onion, chopped

2 stalks celery, sliced

1 cup coconut milk

2 medium carrots, chopped

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions

1. Place all the ingredients except for the coconut milk in a slow cooker. 2. Season everything to taste with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours or on high for 4 hours.

4. Using a blender or an immersion blender, puree everything until smooth. 5. Add the coconut milk, give

everything a good stir, and cook for another 30 minutes.

6. Adjust the seasoning and serve warm.
