by C. Chester Larson Q. Are the different teaching meth ods we use in the church really scriptural? A. It is important that we do not attempt to transfer all educational methodology into the church simply because it is effective in secular edu cation. There is much scriptural basis for a great variety of methods available to the church. A study of the Gospels reveals that the Lord Jesus Himself utilized just about every method in use today. You will notice how Jesus used the lecture method; how He taught by use of visual aids; how often He used ques tions and answers; the important use He made of discussion; how He en couraged His pupils to investigate; His skillful use of the illustration; and probably the most up-to-date method of all: He emphasized learn ing by doing. Q. How does one determine what teaching methods to use? A . Among the factors to consider in choosing teaching methods would be the age and maturity of pupils; the nature of the teaching aim; the gifts and abilities of the teacher himself; the available equipment and materi als, including space in which to teach; the amount of time available for the teaching session. Q. Is it possible to test learning in Sunday school? A . We all recognize that the true test of learning is, “What effect has it had on the life of the pupil?” Ad mittedly it’s difficult to test spirit ual growth in a Sunday school class. The evidences of spiritual growth must come in day-by-day living. However, it is safe to conclude that a pupil is not likely to live accord ing to a scriptural truth if he does not have a basic knowledge of that truth. Therefore, a number of pub lishers are now making available written tests which can be adminis tered at the conclusion of a quarter’ s teaching, as one measuring stick of what a teacher has communicated.
