Hiring Manager Guide to Recruitment

School or college leavers One reference can be provided from a school or college plus one-character reference. Most Recent Employer Reference You should not employ a candidate without the most recent employer reference unless there is a legitimate reason you can no longer obtain that reference. A legitimate reason could be that the company has closed/ceased trading. If this is the case, this should be recorded for audit purposes and two alternative references sourced. Attempts should be made to obtain the first reference and evidence of these attempts must be recorded and held on file, in accordance with the regulations. If a previous employer refuses to provide a reference, you should discuss this with the candidate. It is the candidate’s responsibility to provide and chase outstanding references. Failure to provide satisfactory references may result in the offer of employment being withdrawn.
