JULY 2021

Thank goodness the Olympics are back! Ever since I was a child, I have loved watching them. In the summer of 1996, I even got the once in a lifetime opportunity to watch the Olympics in person here in Atlanta, Georgia! My love for the Olympics began in 1984. Although my parents and I were on vacation that year, I remember spending a lot of time in our room watching the Olympic events on TV. It was a lot of fun to see the rivalries and watch the athletes achieve incredible feats. Then, in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, I saw my favorite sport on TV for the first time — amateur wrestling. Today, there’s a YouTube channel for everything, but back in my day, there wasn’t any regular programming for amateur wrestling. As a young wrestler myself, I eagerly caught all of the details for a sport televised once every four years. After I finished high school, I joined Indiana University’s first- year college wrestling team. During that time, my Dad had the unique opportunity to acquire tickets for the Greco-Roman wrestling events in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. My parents, my good friend (Nick), and myself all went, on this unforgettable experience of a lifetime! There’s something truly phenomenal about the crowd energy at the Olympics. We sat in the middle of the Japanese fan section and took a liking to a Japanese heavyweight wrestler named

Suzuki. We found ourselves chanting for Suzuki alongside the crowd as his match came on. The camaraderie between countries was so unique. I finally got to see some of my wrestling heroes in the flesh, like Aleksandr Karelin, regarded as the greatest Greco-Roman wrestler of all time. When Karelin walked into the room, you could feel people’s eyes move to him. That year, we were lucky enough to watch him earn his third gold medal! Although he’s retired now, he became so massively dominant in the sport that his legacy will always remain. Although everyone will tell you that going to the Olympics is a “once-in-a-lifetime event,” it’s only when you watch the world’s finest athletes competing in person — and you sit amongst an international crowd — that you realize how true that is. It’s inspiring, energizing, and stunning all at once. My heart goes out to all the people who were so excited and made plans for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, especially the athletes. Many would be surprised by how little money Olympic athletes make. Their whole purpose in life is to reach peak physique and achievement every four years for these competitions. Imagine if that moment was stolen from you at the last minute; I hope that certainly isn’t the case for them this year. I’ll be keeping a high and hopeful spirit that the world’s athletes will be safe and taken care of during these upcoming Summer Olympic Games. Although I won’t be in Tokyo, I’d still love to go in person someday again. If you’re joining me in watching the Olympics from home this year, I’d love to hear about your favorite sports and Olympic memories.

FUN FACTS ABOUT THE FOURTH OF JULY You Can Share With Your Kids

Download These Books Today ! When it comes to the legal process, you may have a lot of questions. Well, I have answers! Right now, I am offering my two resource books for free. YOUR LEGALRESOURCE On the Fourth of July, around 155 million hot dogs are eaten in the United States. Okay, so this fact might not have anything to do with American history, but it’s still pretty funny! If anything, the fact that we have so many hot dogs to eat on that day is evidence of the prosperity so many people enjoy in the United States of America. Two future presidents signed the Declaration of Independence: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. They both died exactly 50 years later, on July 4, 1826. This fact is an interesting coincidence sure to fascinate both kids and adults. It’s also a great way to introduce kids to some of the Founding Fathers and share how they helped shape the United States today. In 1776, the year the United States was founded, only 2.5 million people lived here. Today, the U.S. population is 331 million . Lots of people have been born in the United States since it was founded, and millions more came here from other places, hoping to find a better life. Many succeeded, too. Many people want to call this country home!

“Hire this attorney! My son was wrongly taken from a hospital setting to jail with a possible felony charge. We live in New York and hired Matthew to ‘deal’ with our son’s case. Matt took care of everything and got the case dropped, and we did it all long distance. Very professional and responsive. A great burden was taken off our shoulders so we could concentrate on getting our son the medical care he needed. I can’t thank him enough.” –Peter R. AMESSAGE FROM THE FAITHFUL The Fourth of July marks our country’s independence because it’s when the Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence. This fact might seem like a no-brainer, but it contextualizes the holiday for kids. It’s a great jumping-off point to talk about why the United States wanted to be its own country, what the Continental Congress was, what the Declaration of Independence said, and what it means to “ratify” something. What do your kids know about the Fourth of July? Do they know it’s a day when you have a barbecue, spend time with friends and neighbors, and watch a fireworks show? These hallmarks of the holiday certainly do make it fun and memorable, but they don’t really exemplify why we celebrate the Fourth of July, the anniversary of when the United States declared its independence from Britain. So, along with the sparklers and hot dogs, here are a few fun facts about Independence Day you can share with your kids to help them understand the significance of the holiday.

RELEASEDWITHOUT CHARGES Why You’re Not Off the Hook Just Yet

If you were arrested in the state of Florida and released without charges, you may not be off the hook just yet. The accused may be released on recognizance (ROR), meaning the court releases the accused based on their promise to appear at the next court hearing. This scheduled court day is now your arraignment; at this time, the state will alert you of what charges are being filed against you.

Without a lawyer, you must still appear at the arraignment to hear the charges and enter a plea. A lawyer can guide you in making the best response at your arraignment hearing such as not guilty, guilty, or no contest. If you were arrested and released, your freedom and livelihood are at stake. Contact us immediately so we can build the best defense strategy for your case.

If you’ve posted bond in Florida and the state decides to no-file your case, the state may choose not to file charges against you. A no-file may occur if the judge finds it difficult to prove that

the accused committed a crime or is even involved. Just because your case is no-filed, it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily time to celebrate yet. Your case can always be

picked back up depending on the charge and statute of limitations for the case.

Prior to arraignment, the court must advise the defendant of their right to have an attorney or the right to have an appointed lawyer if the defendant cannot afford representation for arraignment. It’s never a good idea to represent yourself alone. If an experienced criminal defense attorney represents you, the arraignment could be delayed or even eliminated.

Can you be arrested at arraignment, even if you posted bail?

What about your right to have a speedy trial? The Sixth Amendment

If you were arrested for a new offense while on bail before your upcoming arraignment, the judge has the right to arrest you at your arraignment pending a new bail hearing.

gives you the right to have a speedy trial. If you were arrested for a misdemeanor in Florida, the state only has 90 days to pick the case back up and 180 days for a felony charge.

The Paddleboard Craze Is Here to Stay

What’s ‘SUP? The Stand-Up Paddleboard Craze That Never Went Away

O utdoor and exercise crazes come and go almost as fast as hairstyles and popular app games do. But every once in a while, a trend comes along that remains popular — think karate, which spiked in the ‘60s and again in the ‘80s, and it can still be found in almost every American city to this day. Back in 2013, one such trend arose: the stand-up paddleboard, or SUP for short. The act of standing on a floating piece of wood in a surfboard shape and paddling (or poling) yourself along likely goes back thousands of years, but the SUP craze can be traced back to one man — and he’s not even in his 60s yet! That man is famous surfer Laird Hamilton, a household name in a sport that doesn’t usually generate them. And Laird, along with the Waikiki Beachboys, showed the world a new way to hit the water in the first decade of the 21st century.

Unlike other crazes, the gear was simple and the activity beginner-friendly. To start, you only need a paddle, a board, a life preserver, and of course, a place to go! It’s a new way to see the water, which only boosted its popularity. Even veteran water sports enthusiasts weren’t used to standing on the water instead of sitting in a boat! But according to the industry’s own numbers, that popularity never died down. As it turns out, SUP is a good way to get around, and a lot of folks need that. Many cities, such as San Antonio, feature “paddling trails” that let SUP practitioners see the city in a new way or even commute via their board. How cool is that? If you’re looking for a new hobby this summer, it’s easy to rent a stand-up paddleboard and learn the basics. Take a class, head out into the water, and give it a shot. Who knows, you might be one of the thousands of Americans to discover a lifelong passion!
