Foundation Board Member Cain A. Hayes: A CEO for Such a Time as This, Leading Teams to Create Silver Linings Playbooks for Equity

By LaTricia Woods

T here’s little doubt that 2020 was a battleground on which leadership, in every respect, was tested. The question that many of our leaders had to respond to directly and urgently was, how does leadership rise to the occasion when challenged by significant crisis?

For Cain A. Hayes, President and CEO of Gateway Health, 2020 was met with a trifecta of crises. “First, we had a health crisis, driven primarily by the corona- virus pandemic. Second, we had an economic crisis that hit Main Street and Wall Street sharply and drove many into unemployment. Lastly, we experienced

civic unrest, unlike any we’ve seen since the civil rights era, sparked by the killing of Black Americans by law enforcement. In ‘CEO School,’ they don’t teach you how to navigate a company through a period of three crises happening all at once.”
