high and high school. I move them far from their comfort zones and demon- strated a new framework to understand oppression, corruption, capitalism, and greed.” “At Wake Forest University, I played a critical role in establishing the Wake Forest University Chapter, the Omicron Sigma of Kappa Alpha Psi in 2005. If you really want to learn about Kappa Al- pha Psi—chartering a chapter is where the rubber meets the road. It was a real challenge alongside a real joy.” “Like my mentor Dr. George C. Wright, I did not want to give up teaching as I entered into high level administration. Both my parents introduced me to scholarship, teach- ing, and service as they worked on their graduate degrees—so I inherited the gift and talents to being an effective men- tor, advisor, and educator. When each new appointment, I have maintained an interest in shaping the curriculum and academic standards for students across the disciplines. As an Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, I am intimately involved in the development of new courses, guidelines, procedures, and support of faculty innovation to produce outstanding undergraduate and graduate students.” Dr. Wilson stated “at the core of my academic background, I care tremen- dously about the production of how we develop young intellectuals. I want students to be engage and excited about learning. Moreover, I want the students to be well-rounded. The involvement of Greek life is a learning process and we must continue to educate our young men about the importance of being reli- able Kappa brothers.” “I believe teach- ing the importance of achievement is a full-time job. As a leader, I want people to understand the urgency of saving lives with knowledge. Therefore, I strive to teach young men and women how to seek mentors to learn about leadership.”
student-leadership development. At PVAMU, he created a leadership and mentoring program for African American male students called, B.L.A.C.K. (Broth- ers Leading and Cultivating Knowledge). Dr. Wilson started with ten founding young men, who represented all of the top organizations. He then explained to these 10 men that they would select 10 additional members into B.L.A.C.K., using a criterion of only selecting truly exceptional young male leaders. The second 10 leaders when then select the next 10 and each would do the same until the organization reached 100 mem- bers. This organization was extremely popular and needed at a time with all of the Black Male Greek organizations were not “active” at Prairie View A&M University because of hazing allegations. A year later, Dr. Wilson established a sister organization, Purple Jackets, for outstanding young female student lead- ers—modeled after the Orange Jackets at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Wilson elaborated “for over 25 years, I have worked in Higher Educa- tion and everywhere I have worked, members of Kappa Alpha Psi have been present to help shape my experiences. After graduating from U.T. Austin, I studied and worked with many universi- ties and at every academic experience, I had a Kappa Brother there to support
my development as a budding scholar, researcher, lecturer, mentor, advisor, supporter, listener, and leader.” My father, a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi told me to always think and act with the number of three in mind. He inspired me to 1) think quietly; 2) act bravely; and 3) recalibrate imme- diately. Hence, I strive to do things in three components and it works for me. Three points, three examples, three ideas, three sections to consider, and three closing factors to conclude. “As a future University leader, I must continue to learn about the significance of effective communication skills that include: empathy, collaborative vision, ethics, honesty, and agency to support people seeking the guidance of leaders, who care and want to make a difference. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. serves as a great network to meet outstanding leaders. Therefore, our Bond is critically important. We must protect the brand, mission and vision of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. to achieve every day, every month, and every year.”
