H o p e m a k e s t h e w o r l d go round, although one does not have to go into a study in depth on the subject to understand that this emotion is pinned primarily to the tangible factors of this life. Men hope for more money, greater hon ors, brilliant achievements, stronger love, increased knowledge, all for this life, in this world. But the Bible has something to say about hope on another plane. After a session of discipline, I went to prayer and actually asked the Lord if this heart-breaking work was worth the effort. There are times when it would be far easier to clean the house throughout, iron 20 shirts and cook three meals a day for 10 people than to stand up to the defiance of a teenager. Nothing takes the “ starch” out of a parent quite so completely as g r a p p l i n g with Satan for the soul of his child. As I turned to the Scriptures, God directed my attention to Proverbs 19:18: “ Chasten thy son wh i l e there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.” God riveted my attention on HOPE. Apparently there is a point of no return in this matter of disciplining and rearing ch i l d r en . “ . . . while t h e r e is hope . . .” implies that a time can come when hopelessness could be the order of the day. When and where that point of no return is reached I may never know. Suffice it for me to know that I dare not let down the bars of vigilance for one moment. I cannot say in effect to my child: “ Don’t let this problem or that question or any special need come into your life now. I have too many other matters to look after to day. Wait to ask questions, create problems incident to your age, or be come rebellious — actually, child of mine, wait to grow up until I have time or inclination to help you.” Listen to the divine imperative: “ Chasten [and love, for that is in herent in c h a s t e n i n g ] . . . while there is hope . . .”
