A standout apprentice at NRC Newtownabbey Campus, Blake excels in both theory and practical work, gaining top exam scores and already managing jobs on site. His passion for plumbing, dedication to renewable energy and commitment to continuous learning make him a valuable asset to his employer Newell Contracts Limited. Displaying a keen interest in renewable energy and green technologies, he has recently completed a Vaillant Heat Pump course outside of his apprenticeship training. Blake is always happy to advise and support his peers in the workshop environment while, in theory classroom sessions, he demonstrates a strong understanding of his discipline and holds the highest exam scores in his year group. Blake’s employer said his dedication to mastering plumbing skills, strong work ethic and ability to tackle complex tasks have made him an invaluable part of the team. Aaron Newell, MD of Newell Contracts, said, “Blake consistently goes above and beyond for our customers, even taking the initiative to cut a customer’s grass in his own time while they were on holiday. “At home, he spends his free time researching and learning the latest plumbing technologies from smart systems to eco- friendly solutions and is always eager to share his knowledge with his peers.”

Demonstrating exceptional skill, dedication, resilience and leadership which inspires his peers, Jack Fenton has been named Apprentice of the Year. A student at Belfast Met’s Millfield Campus, Jack has completed Level 2 and is currently studying for his Level 3 in plumbing. He came a close second in the NI regional final of WorldSkills UK, is set to complete in the UK national final in Greater Manchester and, at the first-ever Further Education NI Excellence Awards in June, received the FE Excellence Apprentice Award. He has excelled in his vocational qualifications, demonstrating resilience, adaptability and a deep understanding of the application of theory to practical tasks. Taking the lead in class discussions, Jack fosters inclusivity, ensuring all voices are heard. During project-based learning discussions, he coordinates tasks, delegates responsibilities, and motivates team members towards a shared goal. Working for Ian Reid Heating Services since September 2021, his employer describes Jack as the best apprentice he has employed, saying, “I can give Jack instructions and send him to a job, know he will put in 100% effort and complete the job to a very high standard. Jack is a valuable asset to my company and will be key to future growth and development.”
