Gavin Vaughan is celebrated as an Unsung Hero for his extraordinary dedication to raising awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research. In July 2024, Gavin embarked on a 1,000-mile sailing challenge around Ireland, inspired by the tragic loss of his close friend and crew member Neale. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on New Year’s Day and sadly passing in February, Neale’s memory became a powerful motivation for Gavin. With a modest initial goal of raising £2,000 for NIPANC, Gavin’s commitment and passion propelled him to raise an impressive £13,000. The journey was both a tribute to his friend and a powerful way to increase awareness about this devastating disease, which affects so many, yet receives limited public attention. Gavin’s month-long voyage captured the hearts of many, serving as a testament to his resilience, courage and deep compassion. His efforts will not only contribute to supporting families impacted by pancreatic cancer but also help fund crucial research aimed at finding better treatments. Congratulations to Gavin Vaughan on being chosen for the Unsung Hero Award. His dedication and drive have made a meaningful difference to both his community and the wider cause of pancreatic cancer awareness.
Natalie Robinson exemplifies what it means to be an Unsung Hero through her unwavering commitment to customers, often going far beyond the call of duty. Late afternoon at 3.30pm, she received an urgent call from a customer in distress. The customer’s boiler had broken down and the power outage it caused was critically affecting his terminally-ill mother, whose medical equipment relied on electricity to function. Recognising the gravity of the situation, Natalie acted immediately, arranging for an engineer, Paul, to be on site within the hour. Upon arrival, Paul found the boiler beyond immediate repair but managed to restore electricity, ensuring the life-supporting equipment remained operational. Natalie didn’t stop there; knowing the importance of continuity for the family’s safety and peace of mind, she organised an emergency boiler installation for the following day. The customer’s heartfelt thanks and words of appreciation underscored how deeply Natalie’s actions had impacted his family. This compassionate and decisive response is a reflection of Natalie’s dedication to her role and to Safe Gas NI, making her a truly-deserving recipient of the Unsung Hero Award. Congratulations to Natalie Robinson on this remarkable achievement.
