Michael Nugent, founder of NUGENT and recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award, has established an impressive legacy of engineering, innovation and leadership. Boldly creating his own company at the age of 18, it is now a second-generation family business with more than 300 employees and offices in Pomeroy, Belfast, Dublin and London. Sixty years on, Michael remains heavily involved with its management, opens up the Pomeroy office every day and is regarded by his team as a helpful man who treats all members with respect and gratitude. Born and raised in rural Co Tyrone as the second of nine children, Michael inherited a strong work ethic and fascination with engineering from his father Michael Sr. From his mother Lucinda, he learned the values of integrity and trust that would become pillars of his personal and professional life.

Leaving school at 13, Michael completed an apprenticeship in plumbing and heating before founding Michael Nugent Plumbing & Heating Engineers in Pomeroy in 1963. From his early days as a sole-trader enterprise to leading an award-winning company in MEP engineering, Michael has instilled the core values enabling NUGENT to deliver cutting-edge construction solutions in pharma, commercial, education, healthcare, heritage, hospitality and leisure, and life sciences. Always putting people at the heart of everything he does, Michael has a passion for creating opportunity for the next generation. The business has trained over 200 trade and higher-level apprentices, some of whom have risen to senior management and director positions within the business. Over recent years, the Nugent family has raised and donated over £50,000

annually to charitable causes, including Holy Trinity College Cookstown Foundation, Air Ambulance NI, Tiny Life, Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI and Lough Neagh Rescue. NUGENT also sponsors the Pomeroy GAA Senior team jerseys and Queen’s University Belfast men’s teams, Cookstown Hockey Club, and various motorsport events. Outside of work, Michael has pursued a passion for motorsport, competing in high-level amateur racing across Ireland and GB from the 1960s through to the early 1980s. He won the Formula Atlantic Championship in 1980, competing alongside Eddie Jordan and Derek Daly, and still competes today.
