Welcome to our 46th annual production sale! We appreciate your continued interest in our program, and feel the cattle we’re raising just keep getting better. And what a time in the history of raising cattle to be raising the best!
There have been many changes in the cattle business to enhance production, to remove some of the challenges in predictability. We’ve tried to keep the toolbox full through taking precise weights and measures, ultrasound data, and DNA testing that provides enhanced EPDs. That also includes new indexes that are explained on page 2 in this catalog. You, the producer, can decide which tool(s) works best for your operation. We are confident enough in these bulls that we reserve the right to retain semen for in-herd use on any bulls sold, at our own cost. Should you wish to make semen available on the open market, let us know, and we’d be happy to work with you on a plan to make that happen. Customer service is a top priority for us, so every animal carries a one year breeding guarantee. We’ll also work to deliver the cattle to you as reasonable as possible. We’ll keep and feed the bulls until the breeding soundness exams are complete, and start working out delivery. That being said, buyers may take delivery of the bulls, open heifers, and especially the bred heifers as soon as possible. We’ll return $50 to you if you take your animal home sale day. The bulls and heifers offered here have been developed to the best of our ability and with what the environment can offer. We offer creep feed to the calves for the last 50 days before weaning. Yearling bulls and heifers have been developed on a growing ration in line with getting them ready to breed, without over-conditioning them. The bred heifers ran in dry lots this summer, due to the loss of pasture acres, until late fall, when they graze corn stalks and cover crop until deep snow or the grazing becomes diminished. Ground hay and silage, with a well balanced mineral program take the place of grazing during frigid South Dakota winter months. Rest assured, all of this is done in coordination with our nutritionist, with the health of the cattle and the stage of production in mind. You have come to expect excellence from the Symens program and your interest in their genetics is certainly appreciated. Bulls and females carrying the SYES prefix can be found working from South Dakota to both coasts and borders. It is truly impressive when you consider their 55- year involvement in the breed and the fact their genetics positively influence both purebred and commercial herds across the country. Take comfort in the fact the Symens operation keeps a keen eye on how their genetics perform from birth all the way to the rail. In an effort to better predict how their genetics will perform, notice that animals in the sale have been genomically-tested. The end result of this meticulous attention to each and every detail are bulls and females proven to work in a variety of herds. It should come as no surprise that customer service remains a top priority, and that each and every customer is important to the success of their program. Many of you reading this catalog are previous customers—a return customer is the ultimate compliment.
