KEY SCHOOL DATES
A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER This half-term our charitable focus is supporting those in need through clothing donations. Turn your old clothes into good deeds by donating any clothing that is in a wearable condition into our green collection box at reception. See advert on page 3 for more information. I would also like to remind you that any unwanted items of uniform are always gratefully received. Thank you to everyone who attended the Year 11 Parents’ Consultation Meetings on Wednesday. We are now reaching the end of GCSE courses and these final months are vital preparation time for the final exams and coursework for students. This week our Year 11 Design Technology students had a full day in the workshop developing prototypes for their GCSE coursework. They are working to externally set design contexts: supporting and participating in sport, eating away from home or educational toys and games. It was wonderful to see their focus, innovation and creativity. We look forward to showcasing their work in an exhibition later in the Spring. This week was the turn of our Year 10 bakers to compete for the title of bake off champion. As ever the competition was fierce and the cakes absolutely delicious. I am pleased to announce that the winners were 10PGO with their fabulous raspoberry and lemon cupcakes. If you missed it at the end of last term please do take a look at our Autumn School Magazine to see all the wonderful things our pupils got up to.

Following this morning’s assembly with Year 11 about the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award I would like to challenge our school community to push themselves out of their comfort zone in 2025. Research shows that adventure experiences produce physical, psychological and social benefits in children including: • Reductions in anxiety and depression • Better behavior • Enhanced academic achievement • Improved physical well-being • Strengthened understanding of one’s identity and self-worth • Enhanced interpersonal skills and social development Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation has commented on this: “Adventure helps to generate a range of positive emotions, including excitement, joy and wonder. It also helps to develop a healthy relationship to uncertainty. That is so important in boosting confidence and in children learning how to manage fear and anxiety.” You can find out more here.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8
It has been an enjoyable week as Year 8 pupils are well and truly back into the swing of things and I have had some great feedback from subject teachers.
On Monday afternoon Year 8 students combined with students from Year 9 to take part in the Basketball Final League game against Christs School, winning convincingly 60 - 20! It was a fantastic afternoon of Basketball, the girls were relentless and played amazingly. Our top three epraise forms this week are as follows - 8PUN with 1,449 points, 8PIR with 1,224 points, 8SHU with 1,185 points - keep up the great work! Well done to all the students who are demonstrating the enjoy, achieve and empower aspects of school life. Please remind your child that you can be awarded epraise both in lessons and form times for: working collaboratively, great work and homework, supporting each other, engagement in class activities, helping in the classroom, and supporting the teacher/tutor.
Looking ahead, students are reminded to bring in a reading book for silent reading on Mondays as we are dedicating form time for students to read independently.
We encourage you to remind your children about the key expectations around uniform, lanyards and chrome books. This will enable Year 8 to put their best foot forward and continue in the same positive way that they have started the school year. We would love to hear about and celebrate our students’ achievements outside of school. Please be sure to let us know of anything your child has been involved with that deserves recognition.
Have a good week!

BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘My name is Mina’ by David Almond
In the form of a journal, this book is a prequel for the book Skellig, and focuses on the character Mina before she has met Michael and Skellig. It focuses on her troubles with school and family and shines a light on her creativity. It is a fun, but serious book all at the same time and has many different forms of creativity like poetry and made-up stories. Overall, it’s a very personal and emotive tale, with lots of much needed honesty about school and the stories that are missed of kids who struggle in school. - Isabelle H, Y11

FRIDAY MATHS PUZZLE Our learning focus for tutor time on Fridays this term is mathematics, with the maths department setting some thought provoking brain teasers each week for pupils to grapple with. Did you know that maths puzzles can boost mental maths skills? To solve a maths puzzle you must do simple maths in your head. At first you may need paper and a pen to work these out but with practice you will become more able to use memory and critical thinking skills to solves these in your head. Please have a go at this week’s problem, talk to your child about how they approached it and what the solutions were. We hope you enjoy these at home as much as the students have enjoyed them with their form!

Congratulations to the Year 8/9 Basketball team (pictured) who won their final league game against Christ’s School on Monday. They played a splendid game, convincingly beating their opponents 60-20! Well done! Despite a hard played tournament our Year 10/11 Rugby Team managed to only win one of their three matches on Tuesday. Well done to our try scorers Amelie B-A 11EAH, Eve H-P 10FGR and Neuza E-M 11SHO. With the Y7 Netball league beginning after Feb Half Term, we have begun friendly fixtures to get the ball rolling. Students aged 11 – 25 are invited to enter the 2025 Grantham Climate Art Prize by designing a mural to draw attention to the climate crisis. Two murals will be unveiled in 2025 at Imperial College London. Designs for the first mural – at the South Kensington campus – are now being sought. Students from schools, colleges and universities across London can submit a design for the mural with the theme From Grey to Green – focusing on the importance of boosting nature and green innovation to allow us to have a more sustainable future, which will be better for the planet and for our physical and mental health. The winning design will be transformed into a large-scale (9.4m by 2m) mural by a professional artist while runner-up designs will be exhibited on the campus. The art prize is a biennial competition and previous themes have included British Biodiversity Loss (2021) and A Greener, Cleaner, Cooler World (2023), inspired by our 9 things you can do about climate change: www.imperial.ac.uk/stories/climate-action/. As well as the 12 murals across Great Britain – from Brighton to Glasgow – we ’ve had exhibitions of winning and runner-up designs at COP26, in museums, and on billboards in London’s transport hubs.
