HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

KEY SCHOOL DATES

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER This half-term our charitable focus is supporting those in need through clothing donations. Turn your old clothes into good deeds by donating any clothing that is in a wearable condition into our green collection box at reception. See advert on page 3 for more information. I would also like to remind you that any unwanted items of uniform are always gratefully received. Thank you to everyone who attended the Year 11 Parents’ Consultation Meetings on Wednesday. We are now reaching the end of GCSE courses and these final months are vital preparation time for the final exams and coursework for students. This week our Year 11 Design Technology students had a full day in the workshop developing prototypes for their GCSE coursework. They are working to externally set design contexts: supporting and participating in sport, eating away from home or educational toys and games. It was wonderful to see their focus, innovation and creativity. We look forward to showcasing their work in an exhibition later in the Spring. This week was the turn of our Year 10 bakers to compete for the title of bake off champion. As ever the competition was fierce and the cakes absolutely delicious. I am pleased to announce that the winners were 10PGO with their fabulous raspoberry and lemon cupcakes. If you missed it at the end of last term please do take a look at our Autumn School Magazine to see all the wonderful things our pupils got up to.

Following this morning’s assembly with Year 11 about the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award I would like to challenge our school community to push themselves out of their comfort zone in 2025. Research shows that adventure experiences produce physical, psychological and social benefits in children including: • Reductions in anxiety and depression • Better behavior • Enhanced academic achievement • Improved physical well-being • Strengthened understanding of one’s identity and self-worth • Enhanced interpersonal skills and social development Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation has commented on this: “Adventure helps to generate a range of positive emotions, including excitement, joy and wonder. It also helps to develop a healthy relationship to uncertainty. That is so important in boosting confidence and in children learning how to manage fear and anxiety.” You can find out more here.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

It has been another exciting week for Year 10. This Thursday evening our Year 10 go busy in the food technology room as part of the Waldegrave Bake Off. This year’s theme is cupcakes and the bakes were absolutely exceptional. The students had clearly worked incredibly hard and all students who took part should feel proud. The winners were 10PGO pupils Maya, Scarlett and Isabelle with some beautiful looking raspberry and lemon cupcakes. In second place were Emma, Amelie and Megan from 10EJO who also made raspberry cupcakes but combined theirs with a poppy-seed batter. Third place was taken by Vivienne, Alex and Isl from 10SPI who made some velvety chocolate and coffee cupcakes. A special mention from the judges also went to Betty, Kenza and Sana in 10ERU for their very creative choices and technical skills to create a crunchy centre! This week we also had our Year 10 assembly, led by Mr Bannister. This focused on looking at good news within the world and the media, which sometimes is easy to overlook, reminding us that the media often focuses on the bad news, but it is still important to focus on the good things that are happening within the world and indeed, within our own lives. Thank you to 10PGO who helped clearing away the chairs after this assembly. The students did this in record time! Congratulations as well to 10ERU for getting the most epraise points this week. Good work! This morning students had an assembly on the silver Duke of Edinburgh award. I would ask Year 10 to start thinking about whether they would like to take part - they can read about the expedition our current Year 11 pupils undertook in last term’s School Magazine. This is a great experience and the expedition, though challenging, is also incredibly rewarding. A great opportunity to broader their skills and make new friends too! We would love to hear about and celebrate our students’ achievements outside of school. Please be sure to let us know of anything your child has been involved with that deserves recognition.

Have a good week!

MRS PORTEOUS, HEAD OF YEAR 10

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins

In a dystopian future, the capital holds annual games where one boy and one girl (aged 12-18) from each of the 12 districts is chosen to fight to the death in an arena. The games are televised and shown across the country as a reminder to the labourers in the district that they are powerless against the capital. When Katniss’ sister has her name called during the annual reaping, Katniss volunteers to take her place as a daring act of sacrifice. The contrast between the glamour of the capital and the harsh conditions of the districts is an eye opening com- mentary on the dangers of political corruption and capitalism.

FRIDAY MATHS PUZZLE Our learning focus for tutor time on Fridays this term is mathematics, with the maths department setting some thought provoking brain teasers each week for pupils to grapple with. Did you know that maths puzzles can boost mental maths skills? To solve a maths puzzle you must do simple maths in your head. At first you may need paper and a pen to work these out but with practice you will become more able to use memory and critical thinking skills to solves these in your head. Please have a go at this week’s problem, talk to your child about how they approached it and what the solutions were. We hope you enjoy these at home as much as the students have enjoyed them with their form!

Congratulations to the Year 8/9 Basketball team (pictured) who won their final league game against Christ’s School on Monday. They played a splendid game, convincingly beating their opponents 60-20! Well done! Despite a hard played tournament our Year 10/11 Rugby Team managed to only win one of their three matches on Tuesday. Well done to our try scorers Amelie B-A 11EAH, Eve H-P 10FGR and Neuza E-M 11SHO. With the Y7 Netball league beginning after Feb Half Term, we have begun friendly fixtures to get the ball rolling. On Thursday we took on Grey Court School. Having only played together twice during training both teams played extraordinarily well. Students aged 11 – 25 are invited to enter the 2025 Grantham Climate Art Prize by designing a mural to draw attention to the climate crisis. Two murals will be unveiled in 2025 at Imperial College London. Designs for the first mural – at the South Kensington campus – are now being sought. Students from schools, colleges and universities across London can submit a design for the mural with the theme From Grey to Green – focusing on the importance of boosting nature and green innovation to allow us to have a more sustainable future, which will be better for the planet and for our physical and mental health.
