ever is in the interviewing process, which effects not just manufacturing but all industries. “Job interviews,” Hall said, “are now a two-way street. In the past, hiring companies would look at a prospective interviewee’s online activity before the interview. Now, 85 percent of Millennials and Gen Z’s will look at your com- pany page, your Facebook page, your LinkedIn page to find out more about the company’s background. What’s the culture of the company? What’s the leadership of the company? Does that leadership look like me, where I can eventually grow and be promoted within that company?”

The process has also changed because the dynamics of employer/employee relationships have shifted so dra- matically. Today’s workers have many more options than those in the past and so they can be more demanding and not settle for jobs they do not feel completely comfortable with. So manufacturers are tasked with better expressing how they will enable and make viable a new employees career. Hall’s final appeal to manufacturers is to focus on tech- nology as a way of moving towards a more prosperous future. “We are in the midst of Industry 4.0, the fourth stage of industrial development,” he said. “Industry 4.0 is fo- cused on data, on smart factories, on how can we make a worker more productive, even if they don’t have the tribal knowledge that a 40-year veteran does on the floor.” Additionally, Hall advises manufacturing companies to strongly consider their current work environment and how it can better cater to a new generation that more closely values work/life balance. “Being rigid with your work schedule is another way to alienate workers,” he warned. “Now is the time to focus on ways to be flexible with workers and to acknowledge their needs. “With all this being said,” he continued, “the perception of manufacturing can only be changed by demonstrating it is an industry committed to robotics, it’s an industry com- mitted to the importance of data and to digital information, and it is embracing AI as a fun and productive tool.
