Your First Day Bede's staff will take you on a tour of the campus and invite you to join in some of the sports and games that are organised for you. You will also receive a timetable so you know the schedule. Dinner is usually at 6pm.

Your stay a t B ede’s

Once you have unpacked and settled in you may want to rest if you have had a long journey but we encourage you to be sociable. Some students may be on an excursions so the campus might feel quiet at first so be curious and take time to explore it and speak to the staff and other students.

When you arrive TRANSFER SERVICE

Valuables We will ask if you would like to keep any valuables in the centre office to keep them safe. Bede's cannot accept any responsibility for lost or damaged belongings that are not stored securely. Pocket money & pre-paid cards You do not need any money when you are at school but you might want to bring some to buy drinks, snacks and souvenirs. We strongly recommend that you use a pre-paid debit card, Google Pay or Apple Pay so that you don't need to carry cash. This way is safer, more convenient (your parents can top up your card!) and if you do bring cash to the centre we can't take responsibility for it. In addition, most places in the UK are now cashless. Medication If you bring medication to the campus, we can keep it safe for you so please hand it over to staff when you arrive. They will keep it in the Medical Centre and the nurse or one of the welfare staff will give it to you when you need it. If the medicine is prescribed by a doctor, we will need a copy of the prescription translated into English so we can check how much you should take and how frequently you should take it. If we have any concerns about the medicine or your health then we will contact your parents as your wellbeing is our main priority. Phone home with internet access Every student is given a personal log in and password for wi- fi in the accommodation area and a summer school login to use wi-fi in the classrooms. It is a good idea to contact your parents to let them know you have arrived safely. If the telephone reception is poor, you may need to find a spot on campus where there is a signal. Bede's ID card We will give you a personalised name-badge (that is why we ask you to provide a photo) which you should keep with you at all times. If you lose it we may charge you £5 for a new one.

Bede's staff will be waiting to meet you at the Arrivals exit point. They will be wearing a blue or black Bede's t-shirt and a high vis vest. They will also be holding up a Bede's sign to catch your attention. Don't worry if you don't see a Bede's member of staff, go to the meeting point (listed below) and wait there. We are very busy on transfer days and we might be dealing with another student. In the unlikely event that you are still waiting, go to the Airport Information Desk and ask for help to call the Bede's Transfer number +44 7734 571359 and someone will come to find you. It is a good idea to contact your parents when you are on your way to the centre so they know you are safe. Meeting points: • London Gatwick Airport North – PRET Coffee (Arrivals) • London Gatwick Airport South – Greggs Bakery (Arrivals) • London Heathrow Airport T2 & T3 – WHSmith (Arrivals) • London Heathrow Airport T4 & T5 – Costa Coffee (Arrivals) • St Pancras – M&S Simply Food by Eurostar Ticket Offices CHECK IN When you arrive in centre you will be welcomed by the Centre Director and their team. They will offer you something to eat and drink if you are hungry and show you to your room so you can unpack. First though we need to go through some check in procedures. Travel documents You will be offered to hand in your passport and travel documents on arrival and we will keep them safe for you until your departure. Alternatively, you can keep your passport and travel documents in your room which is lockable.

Accommodation UNIVERSITY RESIDENCES

STAFF ACCOMMODATION Whilst staff are accommodated in the same flats as students, you will never share the same bedroom. DAMAGES You must look after your bedroom and keep it clean and tidy. Rooms are cleaned at least once a week by the cleaning staff but they can't do it well if the rooms are messy. If you break something or damage property or equipment belonging to the school or another student then we will charge it to your parents. LAUNDRY There is a launderette on campus for you to wash your clothes. Bede's staff will show you how to use the washing and drying machines and help you if necessary. We recommend bringing a laundry bag to wash your clothes in. The cost of up to two washes per week is included in your course fees and covered by Bede's.

Students stay in one of the university residences on campus in flats of 8, all bedrooms are single en-suite (private bathroom) and lockable with a key card. There is a lovely common area in each flat, with a fridge, big table and sofas where you can relax with your new friends, as well as a self-study room for quiet study on each floor. BEDROOM POLICIES Students who are under 18 will be accommodated in separate flats from students aged 18 and over. Students under 18 will be supervised by Bede's Staff, who will be accommodated in the same flats as the students. We want you to meet new people and have the opportunity to make new friends and speak English together so we do our best to place you in flats with students your own age. Females are in separate flats from males. Wi-fi is available in the accommodation and across the whole campus. BEDROOM REQUESTS If your parents tell us in advance, sometimes we can place you near a friend or family member; however, once you have arrived on campus it is more difficult to arrange. If you are unhappy with your bedroom, speak to one of Bede's Managers and we will try to help.

Meals FOOD

Lessons PLACEMENT TEST

LEVELS There are five levels from Pre-Intermediate to Proficiency on the English for the Future programme and four levels from Intermediate to Proficiency on the Pathways to Higher Education programme in Brighton.

It is important to understand that the food served at Bede’s will not be the same as you have at home. Most of your meals will be served in Eat Central although some might be served in Dine Central. As there are students from lots of different countries, the menu at Bede’s is a mix of English and International food. There are always two hot choices available for lunch and dinner and there is always a salad bar. In addition, there is always a vegetarian option at meal times. Having different food is part of being in another country and being at Bede’s is a great opportunity to try some new, typically English dishes. The campus also offers a great variety of other places to eat and a diverse range of food. Most of the food offered is Fairtrade. There is also a supermarket on site if you want to supplement the meals with snacks of your own choice. Sample Daily Menu

After arrival, you will sit a placement test with three sections: speaking, grammar and writing. The tests take about 1½ hours to complete in total and they are marked by Bede’s teachers. The results of the three components form the basis

for creating the different classes. HOW CLASSES ARE CREATED

COMMON EUROPEAN

FRAMEWORK A2

Pre-Intermediate

We take many factors into account when creating classes: your age, your first language and your English level. If you think your class is too easy or too difficult then speak to your teacher who will speak to the Academic Manager to see how best we can help. Moving to another class is sometimes possible but we may have a very good reason for placing you where you are. The teacher might be able to change something in the class which will improve your experience but we can't help unless you tell us the problem. MATERIALS We will give you a Bede's notebook and folder to organise the materials you use in class. Please look after them. If you keep your notes organised, it will help you to remember what you have learnt and revise for the weekly progress test.

Students' behaviour The school rules are designed with everyone's safety and well-being in mind. We would like you to have an unforgettable experience at Bede's Summer School and your behaviour will greatly contribute to it. Fantastic students will: • attend meetings and roll calls • participate in lessons, activities and excursions • be polite to all staff and students • help other students if they have a problem • keep their bedroom clean and tidy • turn their mobiles off in class and activities.

• Pastoral care, Personal safety and the care of valuables • Accident reporting and First Aid • Medical and personal insurance • Compliance with the law and Prevent First aid All Bede’s centres are equipped with First Aid kits which are easily identifiable by their green cross sign. Every Bede’s centre has a number of staff who are First Aid trained and there is always at least one First Aider on duty. If you have an accident or require any first aid, you can ask any Bede’s staff member to help you – they will contact one of the Bede’s First Aiders who will treat you in the first instance. In an emergency, any Bede’s staff member can call an ambulance. After treatment, the Welfare Manager will make sure you receive any aftercare you need. You must report any accidents that harm either you or other students to any staff member as soon as you can. Smoking & Drinking SMOKING In the UK, smoking and buying cigarettes/e-cigarettes or tobacco products is not permitted under the age of 18. Students 18+: In England, smoking is forbidden in any enclosed public spaces such as bars, restaurants, train stations, schools, colleges, airports etc. Most such places now have a designated smoking area outside. It is very important that if you smoke, you do it only in the designated area. DRINKING The legal age to purchase and consume alcohol in England is 18. It is illegal to purchase alcohol for anyone under 18. You must not bring or consume any alcohol on campus, regardless of your age. Students 18+: When at social events, Bede's staff will make sure you drink sensibly. When you are on free time, we will expect you to behave like the responsible adult we believe you are and to respect our rule of not drinking large amounts of alcohol. Care of students All students will receive a safety induction, relevant to their age and needs, on arrival at Bede’s, which will cover:

Bede's will recognise your efforts and achievements if you do exceptionally well in the area of one of our values: • Be Compassionate • Be Courageous • Be Curious • Be Conscientious You will receive a certificate and an award to show special recognition. However, you will not have a great experience if you break the rules – and there will be consequences, depending upon how serious the offence is. There is a three step system, so the first offence will result in a warning, and if the behaviour escalates or is very serious, we will inform your parents and if necessary you will be asked to leave. The behaviours and consequences illustrated here are intended to be an example only.

Your safety

Keeping yourself safe UNDER 18s If you are under 18, the Welfare Manager is there to look after you. Electrical & electronic items

Fire safety FIRE EVACUATION

FIRE PREVENTION It is important that we do everything we can to reduce the risk of fire: 1. Do not use irons or similar items in your bedroom. Speak to your House Parent if you would like to iron your clothes. 2. If you use hair straighteners, do not put them on a carpet or bed when hot and make sure you unplug them after use. 3. Do not plug more than one electrical item in one socket. 4. Always use an adaptor if your item has a different plug from the one we use in England. 5. Do not attempt to change fuses yourself. 6. Keep Fire Doors closed – if you see a Fire Door that is open all the time, speak to a member of staff so they can find out who is leaving it open. 7. Do not block Fire Exits. 8. Keep bedroom floors clear of luggage so that you can get out quickly if you need to.

During your stay with us, it is very important that you know what to do in case the fire alarm goes off, so please familiarise yourself with these steps: 1. When you hear the alarm (a loud bell sound), stop what you are doing immediately. 2. Leave the building immediately by the nearest Fire Exit and go to the Assembly Point. DO NOT stop to collect any of your belongings. DO NOT use lifts. DO NOT go back into the building for any reason. 3. If all Fire Exits are blocked, close all the doors and windows and wait for help. 4. At the Assembly Point, gather around the staff member in charge whilst the register is taken. 5. Wait calmly and quietly with the staff member. DO NOT wander off to speak with your friends because the staff might think you are missing. 6. Only enter the building again when you have permission from the staff or from the Fire Service.

This policy covers items that need to be charged with electricity such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets used by students at Bede’s. These items and their charging equipment will be checked on arrival for safety and monitored regularly by Bede’s staff. Please ensure you only bring the correct chargers and cables and that they are in good, safe working order. Bede’s staff may remove any items they consider to be unsafe in the interest of electrical and fire safety. Bede’s permits use of personal electrical/electronic items on the following basis: • Devices are used in school at your own risk • You are responsible for the safe upkeep and protection of their devices • Neither Bede’s nor the host school will be responsible for personal devices which are damaged or lost whilst at the Summer School • Neither Bede’s School nor the host school will provide technical support for personal devices. Site security Comprehensive procedures are in place for handling a security or safety emergency:

advance, we will ask for them during check in. Preventing terrorism

Terrorist attacks are very rare in the UK. In the rare event of a firearms or weapons attack, remember the three words: RUN. HIDE. TELL. RUN To a place of safety. This is a far better option than to surrender or negotiate. If there's nowhere to go, then... HIDE It's better to hide than to confront. Remember to turn your phone to silent and turn off vibrate. Barricade yourself in if you can. Then finally and only when it is safe to do so... TELL The police by calling 999. Prevent Bede's Summer School will promote the values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs. We will teach and encourage pupils to respect one another and to respect and tolerate differences, especially those of a different faith or no faith. We will ensure that all our teaching approaches help our pupils build resilience to extremism and give pupils a positive sense of identity through the development of critical thinking skills. We will ensure that all Bede's staff are equipped to recognise extremism and are skilled and confident enough to challenge it.

9. Never play with safety equipment such as Fire Extinguishers, Fire Alarms or Smoke Detectors.

Never enter a building if the Fire Alarm is ringing.

• At the airport on arrival or departure • At any Bede’s centre • In the vicinity/local area of the centre • On trips and excursions

Bede’s staff will show you the quickest escape route from your bedroom when you arrive. Additionally, Bede's Summer School will complete a fire drill each week in each centre for your safety.

This includes procedures for verifying the whereabouts and safety of students, group leaders and staff, communication with group leaders, staff, students, their parents and representatives. The University operates a 24-hour security/reception point to assist anyone who needs help. You can call security from one of emergency phones on campus, most of these phones have blue flashing lights. There is a 24-hour reception at Bramber House which can be reached on 01273 873333.
