HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

KEY SCHOOL DATES

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER This half-term our charitable focus is supporting those in need through clothing donations. Turn your old clothes into good deeds by donating any clothing that is in a wearable condition into our green collection box at reception. See advert on page 3 for more information. I would also like to remind you that any unwanted items of uniform are always gratefully received. Thank you to everyone who attended the Year 11 Parents’ Consultation Meetings on Wednesday. We are now reaching the end of GCSE courses and these final months are vital preparation time for the final exams and coursework for students. This week our Year 11 Design Technology students had a full day in the workshop developing prototypes for their GCSE coursework. They are working to externally set design contexts: supporting and participating in sport, eating away from home or educational toys and games. It was wonderful to see their focus, innovation and creativity. We look forward to showcasing their work in an exhibition later in the Spring. This week was the turn of our Year 10 bakers to compete for the title of bake off champion. As ever the competition was fierce and the cakes absolutely delicious. I am pleased to announce that the winners were 10PGO with their fabulous raspoberry and lemon cupcakes. If you missed it at the end of last term please do take a look at our Autumn School Magazine to see all the wonderful things our pupils got up to.

Following this morning’s assembly with Year 11 about the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award I would like to challenge our school community to push themselves out of their comfort zone in 2025. Research shows that adventure experiences produce physical, psychological and social benefits in children including: • Reductions in anxiety and depression • Better behavior • Enhanced academic achievement • Improved physical well-being • Strengthened understanding of one’s identity and self-worth • Enhanced interpersonal skills and social development Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation has commented on this: “Adventure helps to generate a range of positive emotions, including excitement, joy and wonder. It also helps to develop a healthy relationship to uncertainty. That is so important in boosting confidence and in children learning how to manage fear and anxiety.” You can find out more here.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11

I just wanted to start off with another massive congratulations to all the students who participated in the Year 11 bake off last week. The feedback from all the teachers involved was amazing not just from the quality of goods produced but the attitude and comradery between the students was incredible. We are very proud of all of our Year 11 bakers! This week we saw our design technology students take on their NEA projects and spent time off timeta- ble to complete their coursework timed assessments. There were lots of spectacular designs and lots of skill and effort going into their work.

This week we have also hosted the final parents evening for year 11 before their GCSE’s giving parents and students an opportunity to ask what to focus on in the remaining few months before GCSE exams.

On Tuesday our Year 11 assembly highlighted good news stories from around the world and how to break the negative cycle of focusing on things that are bad in our own world. Breaking the cycle and fo- cussing on gratitude and positivity can change your outlook on life and help students reach their goals.

Next week is Holocaust remembrance day so we will be spending some time reflecting.

Just an update on the date of the Year 11 core mock exams. These will now be spread over two weeks and start on Tuesday 25 February with Maths paper 1 exam in the morning. The full timetable and de- tails will be shared shortly.

Have a good week!

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins

In a dystopian future, the capital holds annual games where one boy and one girl (aged 12-18) from each of the 12 districts is chosen to fight to the death in an arena. The games are televised and shown across the country as a reminder to the labourers in the district that they are powerless against the capital. When Katniss’ sister has her name called during the annual reaping, Katniss volunteers to take her place as a daring act of sacrifice. The contrast between the glamour of the capital and the harsh conditions of the districts is an eye opening com- mentary on the dangers of political corruption and capitalism.

FRIDAY MATHS PUZZLE Our learning focus for tutor time on Fridays this term is mathematics, with the maths department setting some thought provoking brain teasers each week for pupils to grapple with. Did you know that maths puzzles can boost mental maths skills? To solve a maths puzzle you must do simple maths in your head. At first you may need paper and a pen to work these out but with practice you will become more able to use memory and critical thinking skills to solves these in your head. Please have a go at this week’s problem, talk to your child about how they approached it and what the solutions were. We hope you enjoy these at home as much as the students have enjoyed them with their form!

Congratulations to the Year 8/9 Basketball team (pictured) who won their final league game against Christ’s School on Monday. They played a splendid game, convincingly beating their opponents 60-20! Well done! Despite a hard played tournament our Year 10/11 Rugby Team managed to only win one of their three matches on Tuesday. Well done to our try scorers Amelie B-A 11EAH, Eve H-P 10FGR and Neuza E-M 11SHO. With the Y7 Netball league beginning after Feb Half Term, we have begun friendly fixtures to get the ball rolling. On Thursday we took on Grey Court School. Having only played together twice during training both teams played extraordinarily well. Both games were extremely close, with some impressive netball knowledge displayed! Player of the match - A Team: Molly W. B Team: Sio D.
