Recognizing and Supporting Indigenous Peoples In April, Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) unveiled its first-ever land acknowledgment statement (see photo). This statement serves to recognize the traditional territories of the Piscataway Conoy and other Indigenous peoples on whose land we gather and operate. The statement was created after extensive research and with input from the Library’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team, Anne Arundel County’s Office of Cultural

Resources and a Piscataway-Conoy Citizen. Each of the county’s16 libraries proudly displays the statement in a prominent location. We believe that acknowledging the land and the Indigenous peoples who have historically inhabited and stewarded it is an important step toward building stronger, more inclusive communities. This acknowledgment is just one part of our broader commitment to recognizing and supporting Indigenous peoples.

Arundel County Department of Health has installed innovative Health-to-Go vending machines at two Anne Arundel County Public Library locations. The free vending machines at the Brooklyn Park and Deale libraries contain life-saving naloxone, fentanyl and xylazine test strips which can detect the presence of either drug, COVID test kits and masks. “These locations...were thoughtfully selected to reduce barriers to essential, lifesaving tools,” said Dr. Tonii Gedin, Anne Arundel County Health Officer. “We are hopeful this evidence-based strategy of harm reduction will change the narrative and prevent death from overdose. By making fentanyl test strips, naloxone nasal spray, and other critical harm reduction supplies free and available without stigma, we can drive down the injury and harm from opioid overdoses in our community.” One library customer shared praise saying he witnessed a young child overdose from traces of Fentanyl on a slide at a public playground and was grateful to see naloxone being offered free of charge. The machines don’t take money and were purchased through Culinary Ventures Maryland with grant funds.
