Recognizing and Supporting Indigenous Peoples In April, Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) unveiled its first-ever land acknowledgment statement (see photo). This statement serves to recognize the traditional territories of the Piscataway Conoy and other Indigenous peoples on whose land we gather and operate. The statement was created after extensive research and with input from the Library’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team, Anne Arundel County’s Office of Cultural
Resources and a Piscataway-Conoy Citizen. Each of the county’s16 libraries proudly displays the statement in a prominent location. We believe that acknowledging the land and the Indigenous peoples who have historically inhabited and stewarded it is an important step toward building stronger, more inclusive communities. This acknowledgment is just one part of our broader commitment to recognizing and supporting Indigenous peoples.
