‘People used to ask June how she was doing, and she used to say - ‘I’m just trying to matter.’ And I know what she means. You know, I’m just trying to matter, and live a good life and make work that means something to somebody.’ Reese Witherspoon reflecting on June Carter Cash during her Academy Award® acceptance speech for Best Actress in 2006 for ‘Walk the Line.’ My first non-profit board meeting at five years old was sitting in the corner with my drawing pad while my father was advocating for new internationally-acclaimed artists to be booked into one of the few major concert presenter’s seasons in Portland in the 1970s as one of its founding board members. With intermittent listening to the conversation in between creative exploits, I was hooked on the possibilities of what service could do for others. Whether its blowing leaves to clean a parking lot, offering strate- gies to strengthen the fund raising of an organization, or chairing an opera ball, community engagement is a fundamental compo- nent of my lifestyle. This year, service is balanced between the community and real estate professional and consumer advocacy with multi-year commitments: n ProudGround - Board Member | proudground.org One of the largest community land trusts in the United States: creating per- manently affordable homeownership opportunities using the community land trust model to ensure multi-generational stability. n Oregon REALTORS® - Government Affairs Key Committee Member & Board Member, HOME Foundation | oregonrealtors.org The professional trade association, force for education, and a legislative advocate for free enterprise and private property rights in Oregon. n Portland Opera Guild - Board Member | portlandoperaguild.org Stimulating interest and participation in opera for the benefit of cultural, educational and musical life in all of Oregon. n Southwest Hills Residential League - Board Secretary | swhrl.org Representing a large geographic portion of the City of Portland’s District 4 that encompasses a number of neighborhoods within its boundaries with over 9000 residents. As Realtors ® , our work within the non-profit sphere is amplified as we are natural advocates for strong communities. That respon- sibility extends across the industry as we continue to nurture and improve the environments where we [ and our clients] live and work.
