subtle assaults of Satan. In 1 Thess. 5:8 “ faith and love” are the breastplate, but this is simply another way of ex pressing the same truth, for “ faith and love” are the sum of righteousness, of obedience to God’s will (cf. 1 John 3r" 23). Let us not forget that God must furnish the righteous conduct; it too is part of “ the armor of God." The study of the Bible can be as detached from the bell-summons of the conscience as the study of Euclid. Bible study may be just a pleasant exercise and not a spiritual crusade. against the world-rulers of this dark ness, against the spiritual hosts of wick edness in the heavenly places.” In verse 14 we have the girdle and the breast plate. The girdle is that which holds the whole armor together and gives vigor to the whole frame, girding the loins for the conflict (cf. Ex. 12:11; 40:7; Luke 12:35; 1 Pet. 1:13; is . 18:39). What is this girdle? “ Truth,” i. e., sincerity, reality, (cf. 1 Cor. 5:8; Eph. 5:9; Phil. 1:18; John 4:24). If we are insincere'and unreal, if there is pretense instead of deep reality in our lives, our armor will fall apart and our loins give way, in the day of battle. But our sin cerity must be of God’s own furnishing, a part of “ the whole armor of God.” The breastplate is “ righteousness,” i. e., conforming our conduct to the will of God as revealed in His Word (cf. Rom. 14:17; Isa. 59:17; 2 Cor. 6 :7). Some take “ righteousness” in this verse to mean justification, the reckoning right eous, and not actual righteousness of conduct, but the context and Isa. 59:17 clearly show that this is a mistake.
