Reading the Bible Latinamente Latino/a Interpretation for the Life of the Church Ruth Padilla DeBorst, M. Daniel Carroll R., and Miguel G. Echevarría In Reading the Bible Latinamente , three prominent evangelical Latino/a scholars and ministry practitioners combine their diverse experiences and expertise in biblical studies, theology, and missi- ology to provide an accessible resource that speaks to the lives of everyday people. The authors discuss biblical interpretation from the Latino/a diaspora and provide examples from both New and Old Testament texts. Topics include reading in community and wres- tling with identity and mission in the diaspora. This book is ideal for biblical interpretation, hermeneutics, and contextual theology courses. “This book illuminates and reminds us all of the spiritual wealth and particular contributions of Latino/a cultures and people to the broader church and community. I recommend it for both Latino/a audiences and for those who need all that we bring.” —Rev. Alexia Salvatierra, Centro Latino, Fuller Theological Seminary “An unexcelled basic introduction to Latina and Latino readings of Scripture that shows the depth and the nature of our commitment to Scripture.” —Justo L. González, immigrant, church historian, and theologian “Reading the Bible Latinamente reminds us that the only way to un- derstand the Word of God honestly and clearly is to see it through one’s cultural identity and social location. This book is not just for the Latino/a church but for the whole of God’s people.” —Al Tizon, North Park Theological Seminary FROM THE INTRODUCTION Christian Latinos and Latinas love the Bible. Es la Palabra de Dios . It illumines our world, offers guidance, and provides hope. That reality, however, is grounded in the deep conviction that the Scriptures are God’s revelation to the people of God. That belief is the foundation for this book. What the authors hope to model in these pages is what an evangelical Latino/a voice that can speak to our individual lives, families, congregations, and communities from within our faith traditions might look like. So, we extend this offering to Lati - no/a pastors, laypeople, and students. Perhaps it also can be a lens for others who desire to hear and learn from a marginalized voice— that is, readers of the Bible from all ethnicities may benefit from learning about reading it latinamente.

The New Testament around the World Exploring Key Texts from Different Contexts Mariam Kamell Kovalishyn, editor As the church continues to expand and strengthen in non-Western contexts, it is increasingly important for students of the New Tes- tament to be aware of how our global brothers and sisters exegete and apply Scripture. Even when we share a grammatical-historical approach with others, our interpretation of biblical texts is invariably affected by social location and cultural context, which influence the questions we ask of the text and how we apply it. Western readers can become aware how our culture influences our interpretation by learning from others from different perspectives, including those whose experience may match the original audience more closely than our own. This volume, ideal as a supplemental textbook for courses in the New Testament, brings together distinguished scholars from around the world with perspectives we might not typically encoun- ter and includes some voices of minorities in the United States as well. Each contributor writes on a biblical book or group of books, and together they cover the whole New Testament. These authors expose students and pastors in the West to new questions and ways of reading familiar texts. The result is an eye-opening, spiritu- ally enriching experience that will supplement and strengthen our own biblical interpretation.

Preaching from the Cross Paul’s Theology of Proclamation Frank J. Matera Much has been written about the life, ministry, and theology of the apostle Paul. But what about Paul specifically as a preacher? How did he understand his commission from the risen Lord Jesus to preach the gospel, and how did he put it into practice? Further, what lessons can contemporary preachers learn from Paul about the theology and practice of preaching to help them be more faith- ful messengers of God’s Word? As a leading Pauline scholar and practicing pastor, Frank Matera has considered these questions, and he offers this short, acces - sible book to pastors and students as wise and helpful guidance. Matera explores a Pauline theology of preaching, focusing on three main questions: Why did Paul preach? What did he preach? And how did he preach? He also explores Paul’s preaching as the minis - try of the new covenant. He identifies and explores seven themes of Paul’s preaching, which in turn offer key practical insights for preaching in a Pauline way. Readers are encouraged to “preach from the cross,” making the crucified Christ their focus and their model, demonstrating what they preach by their own cruciform lives. “Matera has brought a lifelong passion for Paul to this powerful book, directed to all Christian preachers and readers. It is easier to preach on the Gospel stories than on the Pauline gospel. But our preaching will be enriched if we consider carefully why Paul preached, what he preached, and how he preached. The book contains a carefully nuanced presentation of Paul the preacher and the message he preached: the new creation made universally available in and through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Not only does Matera guide all who exercise the ministry of preaching in the Christian church. He also reminds us that we must practice what we preach. Preaching ‘is a ministry of living the gospel one proclaims.’” —FRANCIS J. MOLONEY, SDB, Catholic Theological College, University of Divinity, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Engaging Jesus with Our Senses An Embodied Approach to the Gospels Jeannine Marie Hanger Foreword by Grant Macaskill

This book offers a fresh way to read the Gospels with an emphasis on embodiment, helping us to connect our sensory experiences with those of ancient readers. Jeannine Hanger points to the im- portance of engaging our physical senses in Bible reading, presents an approach to doing so with an emphasis on sparking the imag - ination, and looks at how utilizing our primary senses plays out in reading the Gospels. Each chapter includes sensory practices and questions for personal reflection. “It is not easy to write about texts and yet evoke all the bodily senses. But Hanger succeeds brilliantly where most would fail. In this vivid and engaging yet well-researched book, utilizing recent shifts in scholarship, she draws us into the rich sensory world of the Gospel narratives and encourages the use of all our senses in encountering the Word made flesh. An excellent resource for a fully embodied life of faith.” —JOHN M. G. BARCLAY, Durham University “Insightful. Intriguing. Invitational. Engaging Jesus with Our Senses is all this and more. Hanger explores the intersection of the Gospels and sensory experience, building on scholarship from both arenas. The results are both thought-provoking and experientially rich.” —JEANNINE K. BROWN, Bethel Seminary “In this lucid treatment of engaging the senses, the Gospel narra- tives form a literary bridge between sensory experience back then and experiential encounters with the subject of the texts—Jesus— in the here and now.” —PAUL N. ANDERSON, George Fox University; cofounder of the John, Jesus, and History Project “In this very insightful book, Hanger skillfully shows us how to appreciate the sensory aspects of the biblical world as perceived by the earliest believers. This is a wonderful work that brings to life the cultural world of the Bible and guides us to a deeper level of transformation.” —MICHELLE LEE-BARNEWALL, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University “An enjoyable and accessible introduction to the sensory qualities of the New Testament writings. I hope that all who read it will find themselves thinking in fresh ways about what it means to partic- ipate in God and the world.” —GRANT MACASKILL, University of Aberdeen (from the foreword)

Psalms in an Age of Distraction Experiencing the Restorative Power of Biblical Poetry Ethan C. Jones Foreword by Elizabeth Robar

The psalms endure. Throughout the centuries, Christians have read, prayed, and sung this rich collection of poems. But in our current age of distraction, the daily rhythms of modern life revolve more around screens than biblical texts. This book argues that the psalms are poetry for the soul, poetry that shapes us. Beyond highlighting the poetry of the Psalter, the book attends to the theological freight of these poems. As such, we learn to read Scripture more attentively and love God and the world well. The first part of the book explores how we can read the psalms amid the pull of modern distractions. The second part highlights the various features of several psalms, showing what these poems can teach us about living in a more focused, attentive way. This engaging book demonstrates how our thoughts, emotions, and worship of the triune God are sharpened and deepened through the psalms. In an era of dimly lit faces and multitasking, the poetry of Psalms remains ready to train our ears, steady our hearts, and teach us to pray so that we might flourish in Christ. “In a discussion tautly guided by attention to textual specificity and fully informed about current scholarship, Jones invites the reader to be alert to the rich resources of the Psalter. Readers can expect to find in these pages suggestive connections between the imag - inative claims of faith and the day-to-day reality of our common life.” —WALTER BRUEGGEMANN, Columbia Theological Seminary “Jones’s excellent book pays scrupulous attention to juxtaposi- tion, paradox, and metaphor and the way these poetic devices work to enhance meaning. His reading of the psalms is refreshing, prophetic, and strikingly relevant to the age we live in.” —MALCOLM GUITE, Girton College, Cambridge “Designed for nonspecialists, this book will prove edifying and in- structive for a wide range of readers—from beginners to seasoned experts.” —BRENT A. STRAWN, Duke University “While the physicality of digital images on our mobile devices pro- vokes curiosity so that we want more, the ethereal quality of poetic images in the book of Psalms provide a reassuring stability. Jones uses several psalms to illustrate their universal poetic appeal in our transient world, offering a fascinating reclamation of ancient biblical poetry for a contemporary setting.” —SUSAN GILLINGHAM, University of Oxford (emeritus)

Invitation to the Psalms A Reader’s Guide for Discovery and Engagement, 2nd ed. Rolf A. Jacobson and Karl N. Jacobson The book of Psalms is perhaps the most cherished book in the Old Testament. This clear and concise guide invites readers to read and explore the Psalter and roam widely among its poems. The authors introduce the dynamics of the biblical text, helping students of the Bible become careful and attentive readers and giving them confi - dence to explore the Psalms on their own. The book could readily be used in the first weeks of class to orient students to the Psalms. The second edition of this popular textbook has been updated and expanded. It adds a chapter on the shape and shaping of the Psalter and sidebars that highlight the use of the Psalms in popular culture. Discussion questions are also included. “This volume invites readers to enter the world of the Psalter, and then, like a wise guide, it points out the scenery, the history, and the stories along the way. With accessible language and instructive (and often humorous) examples, this is a trustworthy companion to the prayer book of ancient Israel, a book that has shaped both Jewish and Christian worshiping communities for millennia. An invaluable resource for teachers, students, and small groups as they seek to explore the riches of the Psalter.” —KATHRYN SCHIFFERDECKER, Luther Seminary “An ideal introduction to interpreting the psalms for individual or classroom use.” —GORDON WENHAM, Trinity College Bristol

Reading the First Five Books The Invitation of the Pentateuch’s Stories Rachel Toombs This book invites readers to rediscover the artistry and transforma - tive power of the narratives of the first five books of the Bible. Reading the First Five Books highlights key literary techniques like brevity, pacing, characterization, and use of the grotesque, demonstrating how these characteristics shape biblical stories into memorable, complex narratives that reward close reading. This accessible guide unpacks what makes Old Testament stories effec - tive while cultivating skills for deeper engagement with scriptural texts. Extended examples drawn from each book of the Pentateuch are included. Bridging literary study and biblical scholarship, Reading the First Five Books models a spirit of open-minded yet careful reading that uncovers profound meaning in sparse details. The book is ideal for courses on the Old Testament or the Pentateuch. Students will find valuable instruction and inspiration for their own journeys through these sacred texts. “Toombs writes lucidly, freshly, and engagingly. She helps us notice and appreciate things in the biblical text that we hadn’t noticed and appreciated previously. With her help we can better under- stand some of the conventions of the biblical writers and thereby become better readers of Scripture.” —WALTER MOBERLY, Durham University (emeritus) “Toombs is a uniquely gifted guide to the reading of Old Testament narrative. She offers wisdom from the realms of biblical scholar- ship, literature, and theology proper as well as a deep respect for the way the Scriptures form the people who read them.” —REBECCA W. POE HAYS, George W. Truett Theological Seminary, Baylor University “In this wonderful book, Toombs helps us to become ‘attuned to the artistry’ of the Pentateuch. By attending to five important features of biblical storytelling, she demonstrates once again (per her muse, Flannery O’Connor) that ‘the only suitable way to know what a story is about is to read it.’ And read it well, we might add, which is precisely what Toombs models throughout the volume with keen theological-literary acumen, a deft and beautiful hand, and the gifts of a seasoned pedagogue.” —BRENT A. Introducing the

This new series emphasizes how we listen alongside ancient audiences for the Spirit’s voice in our time and contexts when we read the Bible. Written by pastorally sensitive biblical scholars from the Spirit-filled tradition, these commentaries explore how God works in the biblical texts and how Christians can expect God to work today, even if in new or culturally surprising ways. Series editors are Holly Beers, Westmont College, and Craig S. Keener, Asbury Theological Seminary. “Whereas existing pentecostal commentary series have been addressed to the growing pentecostal readership, volumes in the Word and Spirit Commentary on the New Testament series bring pentecostal- charismatic perspectives to wider evangelical and ecumenical audiences, both ecclesial and academic. Each installment gets us one step closer to appreciating how every New Testament document was written not only after Easter but also after Pentecost, and the cumulative witness to the Word and the Spirit will enable deeper awareness of the fundamentally trinitarian character of Christian faith.” —AMOS YONG, Fuller Theological Seminary

The Open Sanctuary Access to God and the Heavenly Temple in the New Testament Nicholas J. Moore

This examination of the heavenly temple in the New Testament within its Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts demonstrates that the ministry of Jesus gives believers access to the very dwelling place of God himself.

“A marvelous, illuminating book that puts the idea of the heavenly sanctuary back where it belongs—at the heart of early Christian thought. This is an insight that has been gathering strength in recent years, but Moore presents the definitive case, and Hebrews is central to that case. A major contribution to our understanding of the message of that marginalized book.” —PHILIP ALEXANDER, Centre for Jewish Studies, University of Manchester; Fellow of the British Academy “A tremendous resource.” —MADISON N. PIERCE, Western Theological Seminary

Nicholas J. Moore (DPhil, University of Oxford) is warden and lecturer in New Testament at Cranmer Hall, St. John’s College, Durham University.

BAR-ASHER SIEGAL, Hebrew University of Jerusalem “Students looking for direction in demystifying verbal syntax and semantics will find a valuable resource in this volume.
