new to the team, Whorley raised his hand, provided some alternative insights, and advised sticking with the new venture. The CEO and others agreed. Today, that line of business generates well over $100 million in revenue annually. “I’ve been in a four-person startup on the screened-in porch of my house and I’ve run a division that had 4,500 people in it,” said Whorley. “I’ve done large and small, and I can say with a lot of confidence that my business education from the University of Indianapolis has held up exceptionally well in every circumstance along my path.”
Jeff Whorley ’01 (MBA) still remembers the moment as if it were yesterday—one of the moments when he realized his University of Indianapolis education had taught him the lessons he needed to succeed in the business world. Years ago, in a New York City conference room at a large company, sitting next to the CEO and other senior managers, there was a great debate about whether a particular project should become a new line of business. As numbers supporting termination were presented, Whorley realized a well-proven analytical method—one he learned while at UIndy—to look at those same numbers could be useful.
