THE POWER OF PERSISTENCE Overcoming Personal Injury Setbacks

One bad chapter does not mean your story is over. Aug. 18 is Never Give Up Day, which reminds us to encourage anyone struggling with a difficult time, injuries, bills, and a daunting case to hang in there and keep the faith. Your patience and optimism will be worth it in the end. Often, when clients walk through our doors or pick up the phone to give us a call, they are going through some of the most difficult times in their lives — the lowest of the low. Possibly, they’ve experienced a traumatizing car accident that put them out of work, or maybe they slipped and fell at a gas station and suffered injuries that have threatened their ability ever to live a normal life again.

injury cases, it only adds to the turmoil our clients experience. To make matters worse, as time drags on, injured individuals can become increasingly frustrated. Liability insurance carriers don’t pay bills as they accrue, and in many cases, people dealing with personal injury cases are out of work and financially strained. The insurance companies are well aware that time is on their side as victims become more

desperate. However, they are often better off if they keep their faith and persevere in the long term. We often see people willing to accept settlements that are lower than their case is worth simply out of desperation. For example, a client might have a case valued at $100,000, but they might be tempted to settle for $60,000 due to frustration and financial strain. In reality, it’s crucial not to give up. Maintaining faith and motivation is important because, oftentimes, waiting it out leads to a much better outcome. This motto spills over to life itself, too. We have many obligations and are so busy that we are just trying to keep up. With work, family, friends, and the daily

hustle and bustle, things can get tricky. I think we all have those days where we don’t want to get out of bed, go to work, or have a difficult conversation with someone. But we all know that ignoring a conflict is never the best solution — it’s always better to face it head-on to prevent it from escalating in the long run. Let this serve as a simple reminder to never throw in the towel — even when things get tough or it seems like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Giving up hope is the last thing you want to do. Keep pushing forward. The reward will be well worth the effort.

Client Testimonials

“I consulted with Rob Usry about a potential malpractice case, and I cannot say enough about his wisdom and candor! He is one of the most honest attorneys that I’ve encountered within the Spartanburg area. He is brilliant and well-spoken, compassionate and charismatic, and is an attentive listener. You are not going to find a more truthful attorney to represent the facts than him. In an age where honesty is persecuted, I think his willingness to embrace truth speaks volumes about his character. I highly recommend his services and will consult him next time I need legal representation!” -Keisha -on- KEYS “Mr. Usry was very polite and professional. He called me on time to discuss my case and answered all my questions realistically. He guided me on how to bring forth the most pertinent aspects of my case and what to focus on as to how my injury/disability affect my most important tasks at home and work. He made me aware of how the process works in dealing with the workers’ comp commission meeting and what to emphasize in ongoing discussions. I felt so much better after speaking with Mr. Usry and now have confidence to deal with this case. I highly recommend this firm for any of your workers’ comp concerns or questions. ” -Diana Skaggs

Winning Back a Revoked License After 6 DUIs AGAINST ALL ODDS

A while back, a man with six DUIs in three states, additional charges including driving under suspension and weed possession, and a permanently revoked driver’s license asked me to help him get it back … and I did. South Carolina law forbids reinstatement for someone in Dave’s position. It allows one chance for license reinstatement, but it’s voided if you get another DUI after permanent revocation. Dave had done that. But when one door closes, sometimes another opens. Here’s how we won Dave’s case, regained his driver’s license, and restored his freedom after two decades of struggle. Into Darkness In 1995, Dave’s life spiraled downward after a bad split from his ex-wife. Until then, he rarely drank. The divorce led to depression, alcoholism, and legal problems. Within eight years, he accumulated an extensive criminal record. He lost custody of his children, sold his home, and moved in with

his mother. He could only drive a moped and still managed to get DUIs. Out of Darkness Dave’s last DUI was on July 22, 2007, and then recovery began. He served a year in prison and decided to stop drinking. He joined AA, made amends with his family, walked his daughter down the aisle, and was his son’s best man. With a supportive boss, he rebuilt his life, repaired his credit, and pursued his passion for music. However, not being able to drive was a significant hindrance. Into the Light I knew Dave deserved a second chance, but the law is unforgiving. We needed a powerful strategy. I aimed for a pardon on all his charges, hoping for at least the last one to be pardoned. We submitted a detailed packet to the pardon board with affidavits from supporters, including his children, sister, boss, mother, and even his ex-girlfriend and ex-wife.

Dave received a full pardon on all charges. This meant his permanent revocation could be contested. After obtaining the official pardon, the DMV agreed, and Dave got his driver’s license back. Dave’s journey from darkness to light is inspiring. The lesson here is that even when you’re down, you’re not out. Never give up hope. With determination and the right help, a solution is often within reach. His story proves that redemption is possible, and a second chance can lead to a new, fulfilling life.

When a Virginia family of five decided to temporarily foster a dog in 2023, they weren’t expecting it to be a life-changing event. But they might not be here today if it weren’t for the Great Pyrenees named Moose that they took home for the weekend. Christopher Cushna and his partner, Sheila Janes, were looking for something fun and unique to do with their three children when they learned about the Paws Around Portsmouth program. This program allows people to foster dogs from the local Humane Society for a short time. They fell in love with big, fluffy Moose and decided to take him on a field trip around town.

one of their daughters, Anya. Though everyone figured the energetic dog wanted to go outside, he was persistent, and they quickly noticed a neighboring houseboat engulfed in flames. As the fire began to spread, the family evacuated safely just minutes before the fire reached their boat. “If Moose hadn’t gotten Anya and Chris up, we would not be here, as we were all sound asleep, and the fire spread very quickly,” Sheila said. The family lost their houseboat and everything inside, but thanks to Moose’s heroic act, they are alive and grateful today.

“What I like to think about is that we saved Moose from the situation Moose was in, and Moose saved us on the boat,” Christopher said. Moose’s life-saving actions made big news, and a local woman adopted him. Now, the hero dog is living his best life on a 5-acre farm, complete with a swimming pool. For this family, who had no idea just how transformative a doggy day out could be, Moose will always be their knight in fluffy armor.

The family visited their own music shop, where Moose met potential adopters at an event sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard. The friendly dog later accompanied them to a farmers market, a community band concert, and a flea market, where they met a woman who wanted to adopt him. Moose returned to the family’s houseboat for the evening since the adopter could not bring him home that day. As everyone slept, Moose suddenly woke Christopher and
