Winning Back a Revoked License After 6 DUIs AGAINST ALL ODDS
A while back, a man with six DUIs in three states, additional charges including driving under suspension and weed possession, and a permanently revoked driver’s license asked me to help him get it back … and I did. South Carolina law forbids reinstatement for someone in Dave’s position. It allows one chance for license reinstatement, but it’s voided if you get another DUI after permanent revocation. Dave had done that. But when one door closes, sometimes another opens. Here’s how we won Dave’s case, regained his driver’s license, and restored his freedom after two decades of struggle. Into Darkness In 1995, Dave’s life spiraled downward after a bad split from his ex-wife. Until then, he rarely drank. The divorce led to depression, alcoholism, and legal problems. Within eight years, he accumulated an extensive criminal record. He lost custody of his children, sold his home, and moved in with
his mother. He could only drive a moped and still managed to get DUIs. Out of Darkness Dave’s last DUI was on July 22, 2007, and then recovery began. He served a year in prison and decided to stop drinking. He joined AA, made amends with his family, walked his daughter down the aisle, and was his son’s best man. With a supportive boss, he rebuilt his life, repaired his credit, and pursued his passion for music. However, not being able to drive was a significant hindrance. Into the Light I knew Dave deserved a second chance, but the law is unforgiving. We needed a powerful strategy. I aimed for a pardon on all his charges, hoping for at least the last one to be pardoned. We submitted a detailed packet to the pardon board with affidavits from supporters, including his children, sister, boss, mother, and even his ex-girlfriend and ex-wife.
Dave received a full pardon on all charges. This meant his permanent revocation could be contested. After obtaining the official pardon, the DMV agreed, and Dave got his driver’s license back. Dave’s journey from darkness to light is inspiring. The lesson here is that even when you’re down, you’re not out. Never give up hope. With determination and the right help, a solution is often within reach. His story proves that redemption is possible, and a second chance can lead to a new, fulfilling life.
