26. Scarce 1928 George Ruth Candy Co. #2 “Babe” Ruth (HOF) - SGC EX+ 5.5 MINIMUM BID: $500
Extremely scarce card from a six-card set issued in 1928, each card featuring Babe Ruth, photographed at a 1924 promotional West Coast tour and from the 1927 film “Babe Comes Home.” Issued by the George Ruth Candy Company, each card features a photo caption at the bottom, and many include an offer to exchange the complete set for an autographed baseball, which may be an indication as to why the cards are so scarce today. This example is captioned “’Babe’ Ruth Knocked out 60 Home Runs
in 1927. His Candy Helped Him.” Despite the erroneous SGC labeling, it is the second card in the set, and is particularly desirable because it refers to Ruth setting the home run record the season before. Graded EX+ 5.5 by SGC, just one example has graded higher, but this specimen is quite attractive, with strong centering, square corners, and an outstanding image. A fantastic example of a seldom-seen card of the greatest player of all-time.
27. 1928 Harrington’s Ice Cream #6 Babe Ruth (HOF) - SGC VG 3 MINIMUM BID: $1,000
The Harrington’s cards of 1928 are among the more scarce of the 1928 ice cream-related issues; significant premiums are assigned to these cards over the more common Yuengling issue that utilizes similar design. One of four ice cream-related issues released in 1928 (Yuengling, Tharp’s and Sweetman being the others), not much is known about the four issues, despite the fact that their player selection reads like a “who’s who” of baseball, containing 33 Hall of Famers in the small, 60-card set. Given that the cards were primarily given to children along with ice cream, they are susceptible to a number of conditionwoes, including stains, fingerprints
and all manner of dirt and grime. The cards of Babe Ruth are the obvious keys to all four sets, and are extremely difficult to find with strong eye appeal. This is a particularly pleasing example, a clean and well-centered specimen graded VG 3 by SGC. The grade is primarily due to cornerwear, with a fewsmall corner creases most prevalent at the upper right. The card reverse features the offer of a free gallon of ice cream upon redemption of a complete set, but not the added offer of a quart of ice cream in exchange for Babe Ruth that is featured on many of the Harrington’s backs. A truly exceptional card from a scarce late-1920s ice cream issue.
